Brown swims past Orange, 111-110
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—The Bowling Green State University swimming team held their annual Orange and Brown exhibition meet on Wednesday afternoon, as the Brown team defeated the Orange team, 111-110. The intrasquad meet was held at Cooper Pool. The Falcons will now turn their attention to next week's season opener, when they host the Tom Stubbs Relays at Fremont Ross High School. That meet will take place on Friday, October 4, beginning at 5:00 p.m.
The 2013 Orange and Brown meet was the second straight season that the meet finished with a one-point deficit. Last season, the Brown also edged out the Orange by a single point. Members of the winning team this season were Joëlle Scheps, Emily Waller, Hannah Newman, Maya Skorupski, Emma Kiefer, Brittany Szekely, Stephanie Boyle, Kristin Filby, Kayla Effinger, Nicole Hranchook, and Hannah Albion.
"I was happy with the way that we functioned as a team today—we were racing hard and we were very attentive to all the different aspects of taking care of business that we will see during any official meet," head coach Petra Martin said. "It was also great to see a lot of the ladies trying new things that we are teaching them in workouts right now."
Individually, freshman Victoria Griffin won three events to lead the Orange team. Daniela Carrillo, Joëlle Scheps, and Maya Skorupski each won two events in the meet. The relay team of Griffin, Erica Nieminen, Petra Laudova, and Sadie Ahlers was victorious in the final event of the meet, but it was not enough to complete the comeback against the Brown team.
We know we still have a lot of work to do, but this meet gives us a great opportunity to learn more about where we are and where we need to get better," Martin added.
The Falcons will look to build upon today's experiences during the Orange and Brown meet, as they prepare for next week's Tom Stubbs Relays meet. Following that meet, Bowling Green will prepare for the dual-meet season, which begins on October 26 at Eastern Michigan.
