Falcons Add Three More MAC Qualifiers At Findlay Open
January 31, 2014 | Women's Track and Field
Findlay, Ohio – The Bowling Green indoor track and field team won two events and reached the Mid-American Conference's automatic qualifying standards three more times Friday at the Findlay Open.
The event was an unscored meet and the Falcons did not send distance runners to the event. The featured events at the meet were the elite throwing events and Bowling Green represented well in both.
Freshman Makenzie Wheat set a personal best in the shot put by more than two feet and easily surpassed the MAC's automatic qualifying mark with a distance of 47-feet-10. She placed seventh overall in a strong field of 13 competitors.
Senior Tina Perrine reached a MAC automatic qualifying mark as well, doing so in the weight throw. She went 59-11.75, more than three feet further than her best this year, to place eighth overall.
On top of that, senior Jeanette Pettigrew won the 200 with a time of 25.11 seconds. Her time converts to 24.73, just ahead of the 24.78 MAC standard.
With those three qualifiers, the Falcons have now reached the MAC qualifying numbers eight times. BGSU did so just once a year ago. Perrine and junior Brooke Pleger have qualified in the weight throw, along with Wheat in the shot put. Sophomore Alicia Arnold has qualified in the long jump and the 200, while senior Jeanette Pettigrew has done so in the 60 and 200. Freshman Rachel Durbin met the mark in the mile.
Pettigrew was one of two event winners, joining junior Natalie Sommerville, who won the 600 in 1:38.45. Junior Brittany Sinclair was third in the 400, recording a team season-best time of 58.23 seconds in the event. Sophomore Tiera Parker placed second in the 60 at 7.86 seconds and freshman Raven Porter was second in the long jump at 17-2.
Bowling Green will be back in action next Friday and Saturday at the two-day Akron Invitational.
