Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University Swimming and Diving team won nine out of 10 races and set seven meet records at the Tom Stubbs Relays Friday afternoon. While no team scores were kept, the Falcons dominated rival Toledo, defending Mid-American Conference Champion Akron, Findlay and Youngstown State.
"It was a great meet for us – a great way to start off the season," BGSU swimming and diving coach Petra Martin said. "The energy in the pool was excellent. We were excited to be back home."
Due to renovations at the Student Rec Center, the location of Cooper Pool on BGSU's campus, the Falcons were able to host just one meet a year ago. But BGSU made a statement in their first home meet of the 2014-15 season.
The Orange and Brown placed first in the 200 medley relay, 3x100 butterfly relay, 3x100 backstroke relay, 3x100 breaststroke relay, 800 free relay, 400 medley relay, 200 free relay, 400 individual medley relay and 400 freestyle relay. The only meet the Falcons did not win was the 3x500 freestyle relay and BGSU placed second in that event. In fact, along with winning the 200 medley relay, the 400 medley relay, the 400 individual medley relay and the 400 free relay, the team's "B" squad added a third-place finish in those four races.
Coming off of a spectacular freshman campaign that included four MAC Swimmer of the Week awards, sophomore Victoria Griffin swam on six winning relay teams. Freshman Estela Davis earned five victories, while juniors Jordan Bullock and Hannah Newman were part of four victorious relay squads. Juniors Daniela Carrillo and Kayla Effinger won three races each and sophomores Maya Skorupski and Kristin Filby were part of two wins.
The Falcons opened the event by setting meet records in each of the first four events. Skorupski, Carrillo, Bullock and Effinger set the tone with a 200 medley relay time of 1:44.67. Davis, Griffin and Bullock followed up with a time of 2:51.84 in the 3x100 butterfly. Skorupski, Newman and Davis hung on to win the 3x100 backstroke relay by 0.2 seconds another meet record of 2:48.33. Senior Carmen Young teamed with Carrillo and Filby for the fourth straight meet record race with a time of 3:14.47 in the 3x100 breaststroke relay.
Davis, Griffin, senior Erica Nieminen and Newman continued the winning streak in the fifth race of the afternoon, the 800 free relay, before BGSU picked up another meet record with a time of 3:49.72 in the 400 medley relay by Davis, Carrillo, Bullock and Griffin. The Falcons added a sixth meet record in the 200 free relay behind Effinger, sophomore Sadie Ahlers, Newman and Griffin in 1:35.49.
After the team placed second in the 3x500 free relay, Bowling Green got back in the win column with a meet record time of 4:01.19 in the 400 individual medley by Davis, Griffin, Bullock and Filby. The Falcons closed out the Tom Stubbs Relays with a win in the 400 free relay from Effinger, Davis, Newman and Griffin.
"It is pretty early," Martin said. "There are things we need to get better on technically and strategy-wise. We still have ladies who are getting into the rhythm of their racing. But we are so excited to be here and have our home fans back."
In conjunction with Homecoming Weekend, BGSU will host the Jean Campbell Alumni Meet tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. The Falcons return to Cooper Pool Oct. 24 to face Ball State in the first dual meet of the season.
