Garda Earns Third Straight Defensive Player Of The Week Award
November 17, 2014 | Volleyball
Cleveland, Ohio – Bowling Green State University sophomore libero Madeline Garda was named the Mid-American Conference East Division Defensive Player of the Week for the third consecutive week today. Garda ranks among the top 50 in the country in digs and recorded at least 24 in each of the final five matches of the year.
Although BGSU closed out the season with losses at Ohio and at Kent State this weekend, Garda continued her tremendous pace defensively. She had 25 digs in the three-set loss to Ohio and then added 24 more in the season finale at Kent State. In total, she averaged 7.00 digs per set on the weekend.
Garda completed the season by moving into sixth place on the BGSU single-season leaderboard for digs and fourth in digs per set. She recorded at least 15 digs in 14 of the team's 16 conference matches this year. She averaged a MAC-best 4.89 digs per set on the season, including a remarkable average of 5.88 per set in conference play with 26 more digs than any other player in the league.
BGSU finished the season with a record of 7-21 overall and 4-12 in MAC play. The Falcons graduate two seniors but 11 of the 13 members of the team were just freshmen or sophomores in 2014. As well, BGSU today announced the addition of five newcomers for the 2015 season, putting BGSU in position to take a large step forward next year.
