Jelena Sunjic Named First Team All-MAC
November 20, 2014 | Volleyball
Cleveland, Ohio – Bowling Green State University sophomore outside hitter Jelena Sunjic was named to the 2014 Mid-American Conference Volleyball All-MAC First Team today, as voted on by the head coaches in the league.
Sunjic earned first team All-MAC honors despite missing almost the entire non-conference portion of the schedule and the first two league contests due to injury. However, she returned in strong fashion, averaging 3.00 kills per set and hitting a team-best .246 over the course of the season.
"We are very proud that Jelena was selected to represent BGSU on the All-MAC First Team," BGSU head coach Danijela Tomic said. "To receive this honor despite missing the whole preseason and the first two conference matches shows how much respect the MAC coaches have for her and what she means to our team."
Coming off her first season in which she was named to the MAC All-Freshman Team, Sunjic had 10 kills, four digs and two blocks in the team's season opener against Dayton, but left the match early with an injury. She missed more than a month before returning for the team's third conference match of the year.
In her return, Sunjic posted 13 kills against Miami and she went on to post at least 10 kills in nine of the 14 conference matches she competed in. She had a season-best 19 kills later in the year against the same Miami squad and recorded at least three blocks in each of the team's final five matches of the season. Along with those results, Sunjic posted 35 blocks in conference play and nine aces – both of which ranked third on the team.
BGSU completed the season with a record of 7-21 overall and 4-12 in the MAC. Although the team failed to qualify for the MAC Tournament, the program is in strong shape as 11 of the 13 student-athletes on the 2014 squad were just freshmen or sophomores. BGSU also announced a five-person incoming class earlier this week that will help Bowling Green contend for NCAA Tournament bids, as it received in 2012 after winning the MAC Tournament.
