WHAT THE COACH IS SAYING
Head Coach Petra Martin: "The Eastern Michigan Invitational is a very important meet for us. The MAC Championships are at the same location this year. This will be our opportunity to have the team experience the conditions under which we will be in February. It's a great dry run for what we need to do to get ourselves ready for in a few months as far as the feel for the pool, logistics of the team and the competition, etc. You don't get to run a much better end of the season drill then this one. We are expecting our team to attack each race and dive as if we were at MAC Championships already. The format of the meet is very unique and quite difficult as we will be swimming and diving a lot in a short window of time, but again we are looking for a great response to this type of diversity, supporting each other as a team and attacking one race and one dive at a time."
LAST TIME OUT
The Falcons finished in 9th place with 286 points at the three-day Georgia Tech Fall Invitational. This was the team's first appearance at the meet. BGSU had 21 individual final swims. Estela Davis led the way with four, followed by Victoria Griffin, Kristin Filby and Jordan Bullock with three a piece. Maya Skorupski and Daniela Carrillo swam in two finals each, while Nicole Hranchook, Maria Galic, Stephanie Boyle and Carmen Young all competed in one.
CARRILLO CONTROLS THE BREASTSTROKE
Junior Daniela Carrillo qualified for two championship final events at the GT Fall Invitational Nov. 20-22. She also placed the highest among all Falcon swim and divers. Carrillo placed 10th overall in the 100 breaststroke, swimming a season best time of 1:03.07. In the 200 breaststroke prelims, she swam her way into third place with a 2:15.16, which crushed her previous season best by five seconds. Carrillo finished sixth overall in the championship finals with an NCAA B qualifying cut time of 2:15.00.
GRIFFIN'S SUCCESS CONTINUES TO 2014-15
It hasn't taken long for Victoria Griffin to make her mark in the Mid-American Conference. The sophomore earned MAC Swimmer of the Week honors four times last season and captured her fifth award this season after swimming on six winning relay teams at the Tom Stubbs Relays Oct. 3. Against Oakland and EMU, Griffin won the 50 freestyle, as well as the 100 freestyle. At the GT Invite, Griffin finished 15th in the 50 freestyle with season PR of 23.27. She also swam a season best 1:50.23 in the 200 freestyle finals. Griffin fell just one spot short of the championship heat in the 100 freestyle. She finished with a season personal best 50.19, which was good for 12th place overall.
NEWCOMER DAVIS ADDS SPEED
Sophomore Estela Davis won three individual events (100 backstroke, 200 backstroke and 200 individual medley) and was a part of the winning 200 medley relay team as BGSU defeated Oakland and Eastern Michigan Nov. 8. She set a season personal best in the 200 backstroke. Davis led the team at the GT Invite, earning her spot in four final swims.
