WCHA Release
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Freshman netminder Chris Nell was rewarded for his strong play over the weekend as he was named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Rookie Player of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon.
Nell stopped all 26 shots he faced Saturday night, recording his second collegiate shutout in a 5-0 victory at then-No. 19 Northern Michigan. The freshman from Green Bay, Wisconsin turned away a total of 20 shots during the first two periods, before stopping all six shots fired his way in the third to solidify the shutout. Nell also helped the Falcons go a perfect 4-for-4 on the penalty kill, including a key 5-on-3 stop in the third period. The rookie has now posted a pair of shutouts on the road during WCHA play.
Senior defenseman Matt Prapavessis for Bemidji State has been named WCHA Defensive Player of the Week. Prapavessis led all WCHA defensemen with three assists and four points, helping Bemidji State earn a pair of ties at Alaska Anchorage. The senior blueliner established a career high with three points and factored in all three Beavers' goals Friday night, scoring the first and recording helpers on BSU's two subsequent goals. Saturday, the Oakville, Ontario native jump-started BSU's comeback from a 3-1 deficit by assisting on the Beavers' second goal of the game. Prapavessis also posted a team-best four blocked shots and now is tied for sixth nationally with 38 on the season.
Meanwhile, Brett Cameron of Alaska Anchorage has been tabbed WCHA Offensive Player of the Week. Cameron turned in the first four-goal performance by a men's Division I player this season, tallying each of Alaska Anchorage's scores in a 4-4 tie against Bemidji State last Saturday night. The senior from Spruce Grove, Alberta connected on four of his five shots, giving UAA its first individual four-goal game since David Vallieres in 1995 against Michigan Tech. Cameron scored in a variety of manners, tallying his first collegiate shorthanded goal (on the breakaway), a power-play score, a 5-on-5 play and a 4-on-4 strike. He scored two goals in the first period, one in the second and one more in the third.
The Falcons will be back in action on Jan. 3 to take on No. 17 Robert Morris at Fifth Third Field's Winterfest. The second game of the weekend series will be played the following evening at the RMU Island Sports Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
