April 17, 2014 | Volleyball
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University volleyball coach Danijela Tomic has announced that Clara Martinez has signed her National Letter of Intent to play for the Falcons beginning in the fall of 2014.
"We are thrilled to welcome Clara to our program," Tomic, who will begin her third season at BGSU in the fall, said. "In addition to bringing more depth to our middle blocker position, she will also bring a wealth of international experience to our young team."
Martinez, the daughter of Juan and Ana Julian, hails from Colmenar Viejo, Madrid, Spain. The 6-foot-2 middle is a Spanish National Team Player who has competed in the highest U19 division in Spain, earning both U19 and U16 Spanish championships. She currently plays for Feel Volley Alcobendas and was named her team's best middle blocker in 2012 as well as earning the best server award in 2011. Martinez also earned the World Scholar Championship.
The fifth member of the 2014 class, Martinez joins four others who signed in November of 2013. Those four are Katie Scholten (St. Louis, Mo. / Visitation Academy), Michaela Gabanic (Avon Lake, Ohio / Magnificat), Nicole Slimko (Crystal Lake, Ill. / Crystal Lake South) and Paige O'Connor (Ada, Mich. / Forest Hills Northern). O'Connor enrolled at BGSU for the spring semester of 2014 and is already working within the program.
BGSU Volleyball is 23-9 in Mid-American Conference play in Tomic's first two years at the helm, placing second in the East Division each of the past two seasons. The Falcons won the MAC Tournament in 2012 and won an NCAA Tournament match for the first time in program history, advancing to the second round. Bowling Green will have just two seniors and no juniors on the 2014 squad, looking to replace a seven-member senior class.
