Bowling Green, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University softball team will conclude their regular season in a crucial two-game series against the University of Toledo this weekend (May 3-4) at Meserve Field. The battle of I-75 will take place in front of the Falcon faithful beginning with a 6 p.m. contest in the official light ceremony on Saturday evening and ending with a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday afternoon honoring both Erika Stratton and Katie Yoho on senior day.
On Saturday, Bowling Green will honor both Lee and Marge Meserve in the official light ceremony at Meserve Field. The Falcons added six lights around the field on Nov. 21, 2013 thanks to the generous gift from the Meserves.
"Their vision to raise Meserve Field into the elite status is coming true and we couldn't be more excited. Falcons head coach Shannon Salsburg said. "Lee and Marge have given so much to our program and this is simply the icing on the cake." Salsburg said.
The Falcons will conclude the weekend by honoring their two seniors before Sunday afternoon's tilt. Both Stratton and Yoho, who have been with the program since 2011 season, will be remembered for their impressive careers with the BG softball program. Stratton has recorded her best season as a Falcon during the 2014 campaign, collecting a career-best .281 batting average, 38 hits, six homers, 28 RBI, 62 total bases, and a .459 slugging percentage. Meanwhile, Yoho has added to her impressive numbers by hitting .306 while starting all 50 games in 2014. The Grove City, Ohio native has collected 49 hits, six doubles, one triple, and a career-high 11 home runs on the year--placing her five homers shy of tying Paige Berger's career home run record of 36.
Doubleheader vs. Central Michigan (April 25)
Game one: BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University dropped a pair of Mid-American Conference games on Friday (April 25) evening, falling to the visiting Central Michigan in two hard-fought games at Meserve Field. The Falcons (20-27-1, 6-10 MAC) fell to the Chippewas (31-13, 9-5 MAC) in the first game 6-5 before losing 5-3 to close out the evening.
"Today was disappointing in terms of outcome, Falcons head coach Shannon Salsburg said. "I thought overall we played really hard."
After a two hour delay due to rain on Friday morning, the Falcons and Chippewas wasted no time to score the game's first runs. The two teams scored 10 of the 11 total runs through the first three frames in game one, setting up a winner-take-all attitude heading to the final frame.
Game two: In game two, it was the Falcons that crossed home plate first to hand them their first lead of the game. After starting pitch Braiden Dillow allowed just two hits through the first two frames, the Falcons took advantage and plated the game's first run when Searle double the left center to score Marisa Shook from first base.
However, much like the first game, Central Michigan answered with a single run in the fourth inning and a four-run eruption in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead.
Tied at 1-1 in the top of the fifth, the Falcons recorded a costly error that allowed the Chippewas to record four unearned runs in the frame—including a three-run homer to left field—to hand them a four-run lead that they never surrendered.
Trailing by four, the Orange and Brown's offense came alive in the home half of the fifth. BGSU's Searle started the frame with a leadoff single and scored on a RBI base-clearing triple by freshman Amanda Durham to cut the lead to 5-2. The inning continued when Chelsea Raker hit a sacrifice fly ball to right field, allowing Durham to score from third base to make it a 5-3 ballgame.
"We had a lot of kids step up in different situations." Salsburg said.
Series vs. Eastern Michigan (April 26-27)
Day One: BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University softball team lost to Eastern Michigan University Saturday (April 26) afternoon, falling to the Eagles by a score of 3-0 at Meserve Field. The Falcons (20-28-1, 6-11 MAC) received a strong pitching performance by junior Jamie Kertes, but the Eagles (12-31, 3-12 MAC) held the Orange and Brown scoreless to take the first game of the two-game series.
Junior Jamie Kertes started her 29th game of the season in the circle for the Falcons. Kertes (12-20) allowed two earned runs on six hits in 6.1 innings of work in the losing effort.
Five different players recorded a hit in the contest for the Falcons. Amanda Durham (1-for-4), Chelsea Raker (1-for-4), Madison Schrock (1-for-3), Aspen Searle (1-for-3), and Erika Stratton (1-for-3) all collected a hit in the game. Out of those five hits, two went for extra base hits as both Durham and Stratton recorded doubles.
Kertes (12-20), who was credited with a tough loss, began the game with two scoreless innings, but the Eagles finally broke through in the top of the third inning with a single run.
After a leadoff single and eventually moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, the Eagles scored the game's first run with the help of the Falcon defense. Kertes forced a ground ball to third base for the second out, but an over thrown ball back to third base in an attempt to take out the rounding Eagles' base runner sailed high, allowing EMU to take an early 1-0 lead.
Day Two: BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—The Bowling Green State University softball team defeated Eastern Michigan on Sunday (April 27) afternoon, taking the second game, 3-2, to earn a weekend series split. The Falcons (21-28-1, 7-11) took an early 2-0 lead and never looked to earn a Mid-American Conference split against the Eagles (12-32, 3-13) at Meserve Field.
"Today was a hard-fought game and was proud of the way we rebounded from yesterday," Falcons head coach Shannon Salsburg said. "Eastern is a feisty team and they played tough."
The Orange and Brown collected only three runs on six hits in the game, but it proved to be just enough as sophomore Braiden Dillow and junior Jamie Kertes combined to strikeout 12 EMU batters on the day—including a career-high eight strikeouts for Dillow. The pitching duo, for the game, allowed just five hits and two unearned runs to help the Falcons snap a seven-game losing streak.
"I thought Dillow threw an excellent game." Salsburg said. "She had control of the zone as Stratton called a great game."
Bowling Green was led offensively by freshman Aspen Searle, going 2-for-3 with an RBI in the game. Senior Katie Yoho also collected two hits, going 2-for-3 with a run score. Freshman Chelsea Raker (1-for-2, RBI) and senior Erika Stratton (1-for-3) also added a hit each in Sunday's win.
