2014 Volleyball Schedule
Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team will face nine non-conference opponents that went .500 or better a year ago, including two that advanced to the NCAA Tournament, during the 2014 season as announced today.
Bowling Green will host Dayton, Middle Tennessee State and Pittsburgh in the Stroh Center for the Hampton Inn Invitational to open the season. The Falcons will then head on the road for weekend tournaments at Wright State, Creighton and Oakland before beginning their traditional 16-match conference season.
"My philosophy on scheduling has always been to play strong non-conference opponents," third-year BGSU coach Danijela Tomic said. "It will help us identify early in the season all the things that we need to improve on to prepare us for tough Mid-American Conference competition."
BGSU will host the Hampton Inn Invitational Aug. 29-30 with three opponents that all finished above .500 with at least 16 wins a year ago. Pittsburgh and Middle Tennessee will square off at 3 pm on the first day of competition and Bowling Green will host Dayton at 5 pm. The next day, Dayton will face Pitt at 10 am and BGSU will play Middle Tennessee State at noon. In the evening session, MTSU will play Dayton at 5:30 pm and the night will conclude with BGSU against Pitt at 7:30 pm.
The Falcons will then head to the Wright State Invitational Sept. 5-6 to face Cal State Bakersfield, IPFW and the host school. Bakersfield went 21-12 a year ago and advanced to the Western Athletic Conference Championship match. The following weekend, BGSU will be at the Creighton Invitational Sept. 12-13. That tournament will begin with a match against Wichita State, a squad that went to the NCAA Tournament and posted a 28-7 record. The Falcons will then play Creighton, which went 23-9 and advanced to the NCAA second round before finishing with Pepperdine.
BGSU will conclude non-conference play at the Oakland Invitational, facing the host school before meeting both UC Irvine and Robert Morris.
"I am excited we are opening our 2014 season again at home with the Hampton Inn Invitational and three quality opponents," Tomic said. "Even though we will not be back at Stroh until October, two of our September tournaments (the Wright State Invitational and the Oakland Invitational) are driving distance from BGSU, so I hope that many of our loyal Falcon fans will come to cheer us on."
The Falcons will open conference action on the road at Buffalo Sept. 26 before playing at Akron the next day. BGSU will finally be back at home Oct. 2 to host Miami. Highlights of the conference schedule include hosting Ohio, the defending MAC Champion, Oct. 11 and a home match against rival Toledo Oct. 24. The Falcons' final regular season home match will be Nov. 1 against Buffalo before closing out conference action with four consecutive road matches. The MAC Tournament will take place Nov. 21-23 at Ohio University.
BGSU Volleyball has gone 23-9 in MAC play in Tomic's first two years at the helm, placing second in the East Division each of those seasons. The Falcons won the MAC Tournament in 2012 and won an NCAA Tournament match for the first time in program history, advancing to the second round. Bowling Green will have just two seniors and no juniors on the 2014 squad and has announced the signing of five student-athletes for the upcoming season.
