BGSU Earns AVCA Team Academic Award For 14th Consecutive Year
August 06, 2014 | Volleyball
Bowling Green, Ohio – For the 14th consecutive year, the Bowling Green State University volleyball team has been recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association for academic excellence. A record 684 college and high school teams were recognized for their success in the classroom during the 2013-14 season. The AVCA recognizes volleyball programs across the country that maintain a team GPA of 3.30 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
"I am very, very proud of our team that we once again received the AVCA Academic Award for the 14th consecutive year," head volleyball coach Danijela Tomic said. "We put a high emphasis on academics. Our student-athletes know that when they come to BG they're going to get a great education and graduate. They not only work hard for us in the gym, but more importantly in the classroom."
The BGSU volleyball team earned a 3.58 team GPA for the year, which included a 3.67 during the spring semester. Fifteen student-athletes earned a 3.0 grade point average or higher and 11 posted a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Six Falcons recorded a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
Bowling Green is in rare company in terms of the longest active streaks. Only Indiana State University has been honored annually for a longer period, having received the award for 16 consecutive seasons. The AVCA instituted the award for the 1992-93 season.
"Too often athletic participation is associated with academic underachievement and this stereotype is simply false when it comes to volleyball," said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. "Couple the smarts represented by these teams with the competitive experience and team-focused training gained on the court and we have a potent formula for future leadership! What a significant contribution that is by their coaches and schools."
The 2013-14 recognition marks the 15th time in the 22-year history of the award that the Falcons have been honored for academic excellence by the AVCA. Over 1,000 different schools have earned the award in the program's history, with exactly 6,126 awards being given out in total.
