Toledo, Ohio— The Toledo Walleye hosted the Bowling Green State University hockey program and season ticket holders for both the Toledo Walleye and the Orange and Brown at an open house event held at Fifth Third Field in Toledo, Ohio on Saturday (Aug. 8) afternoon. Home of the Toledo Mud Hens Triple A baseball club, the baseball stadium will host a 10-day event of outdoor hockey events from Dec. 26, 2014 through Jan. 4, 2015, presented by ProMedica.
Part of the week will include the Falcons playing host to Robert Morris at noon on Jan. 3, marking its first-ever outdoor game in program history. The first "modern-era" collegiate hockey game was played on Oct. 6, 2001 when Michigan State and Michigan played in Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, Mich. By the end of the 2013-14 season, there will have been 26 NCAA Division I men's hockey games played outdoors, but this will be the first for either Bowling Green or Robert Morris and just the second to ever be played in the state of Ohio.
"From day one we wanted Bowling Green involved with Winterfest" Mike Keedy, the Manager of Special Events for the Toledo Mud Hens, said during a brief Q&A session with its season ticket holders.
Details about ticketing and the events surrounding the event are starting to be finalized. Those with Falcon hockey season tickets will have seats located in the "club" section of Fifth Third Field. The second deck features better sightless, padded seats, and access to the indoor "BirdCage" bar area. These tickets will sell for $25 individually while those sitting in the lower deck will pay $15 for their seats. Student seating is still being worked out as far as location goes but will only cost $5 per seat.
"When you see the layout of the ice the juices start flowing and the excitement comes," head coach Chris Bergeron said. "We are excited about the 2014-15 season and to be a part of this event is very exciting."
The Falcons will welcome Robert Morris into town on Jan. 3, 2015 to take part of the outdoor game during Winterfest. The last time these two teams took the ice was last December, as the Falcons defeated the Colonials 3-2 in the Three Rivers Classic consolation game. Robert Morris then went on to win the Atlantic Hockey Conference and made an appearance in the 2014 NCAA Frozen Four tournament.
"As special as the event will be for the fans it's even more spectacle for the players involved," senior defenseman Rusty Hafner said. "It will be special, and it's a once in a lifetime opportunity. I can't wait."
Bowling Green's ticket office has announced that season tickets are on sale now for the 2014-15 BGSU hockey season. Season tickets start as low as $152 for 18 games, which includes the first outdoor hockey game in BGSU Hockey history, the entire regular season slate and the exhibition opener against Simon Fraser.
"This year's schedule includes Miami, Ohio State and our conference rivals," BGSU hockey coach Chris Bergeron said. "We will also get an opportunity to experience Winterfest, our outdoor game in Toledo, together in January. The atmosphere at our home games played a big role in our success last season. With the help of our fans, we can continue to make the BG Ice Arena a huge home ice advantage."
General admission season tickets for all 18 games are just $152, while bench reserved seats are $195. Prime chairback reserved seats are also available for $282 (requiring a $500 Falcon Club donation). BGSU faculty/staff can purchase bench reserved season tickets for only $152. For those who live away from Bowling Green or can't attend games, the Bergeron's Buddies Donation program allows fans an opportunity to 'tally an assist' by purchasing season tickets for just $75. Season tickets purchased through the program will be donated to youth-oriented non-profit organizations in the Wood County area.
