Lindsey Butterfield Earns the 2014 Bob James Memorial Award
September 05, 2014 | General, Volleyball
Cleveland, Ohio – Bowling Green State University graduate Lindsey Butterfield has been named the recipient of the 2014 Bob James Memorial Award by the Mid-American Conference Faculty Athletics Representatives, as announced by the league office today. Central Michigan's Kyle Smith was awarded the Bob James Award for the men.
In its 26th year, the Bob James Memorial Award recognizes one female and one male student-athlete who have achieved a minimum grade point average of 3.50, and have displayed good character, leadership and citizenship. The student-athletes are nominated during the year in which they complete their final season of eligibility. The $5,000 post-graduate scholarship is awarded in honor Bob James, the second commissioner in Mid-American Conference history (1964-71).
"BGSU was the best time of my life and it helped me to reach my ambitions and to mold my personality," Butterfield said. "That would not have been possible without my coaches, teammates and the amazing staff at BG."
Butterfield joins a distinguished list of Bob James Award winners from Bowling Green. In fact, she is the 14th BGSU student-athlete to earn the honor in 26 years. No other school has received the award more than nine times.
A member of the 2012 volleyball MAC Tournament champions and the first NCAA Tournament victory in program history, Butterfield was a two-time All-MAC First Team honoree and was an Academic All-MAC selection in both 2012 and 2013. She was named Capital One First Team Academic All-District in 2013 and was one of 30 named as a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award in 2013.
Off the court, Butterfield spent three years as a research team member with the Bowling Green Department of Biological Sciences where she studied the molecular genetics of E.coli and its protein biochemistry. She also volunteered on campus as a volunteer coach for the 'Lil Falcons' volleyball camp and Perrysburg Heights Community Association volleyball programs for underprivileged youth, collected donations for the Battered Women's Shelter, assisted in the MLK Day of Service and was part of Bowling Green's Open House welcome crew to greet prospective students and campus tours.
A native of Springfield, Ohio, Butterfield will pursue her graduate degree at the Ohio State University College of Dentistry.
"All the student-athletes in the MAC are extremely talented and gifted academically, so I'm blessed and humbled to receive this award," Butterfield said. "It's just another way that Bowling Green and volleyball in the MAC has helped me."
Butterfield is the eighth female in BGSU history to be honored, most recently following Christine Chiricosta, who was honored in 2011. Linda (Popovich) Nicastro, another BGSU volleyball player, is the lone BGSU Athletics Hall of Famer to have received the award, earning it in 1990. A third BGSU volleyball player, Stephanie Swiger, was honored in 2008.
