KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 14-ranked Bowling Green State University gymnastics team improved to 3-1 for the first time since 2008 by defeating Alaska Anchorage and Wisconsin-Whitewater at the Ozone Collegiate Classic in Knoxville, Tennessee Saturday (Jan. 17) night.
The Falcons scored a 191.175, which was bested only by Brigham Young's 193.075. Wisconsin-Whitewater placed third by posting a 189.975, while Alaska Anchorage registered a 188.850. The Orange and Brown move to 2-0 all-time against Alaska Anchorage and Wisconsin-Whitewater, as they previously defeated UAA in 1997 and UW-W in 1978.
"Tonight just wasn't our night. The team started well on floor, but we stumbled a bit on vault and didn't recover well," head coach Kerrie Turner said. "We did see some great performances by individuals, as Caroline Ellingboe had a solid night. Jordan Rae stepped up with a great bar routine and Jamilah Ali was able to put together a strong finish on beam. The team did stay strong and continued to try to pick up momentum. I appreciate the character they showed. This is a meet that we will need to learn from and move on from. I have no doubt we will see a different team next weekend as we begin MAC competition at Eastern Michigan."
As a team, Bowling Green finished tied for first with BYU on bars (47.675), second on floor (48.325) and vault (47.975), and tied for second on beam (47.200).
Individually, Jamilah Ali tied for first on beam by scoring a 9.625. Jordan Rae set a new career high on bars with a 9.775, which ranked her tied for third on the apparatus. Lauren Feely recorded a 9.825 on vault – which was the second highest individual score across the entire meet – to place second. Caroline Ellingboe also had a strong night, as she ranked fourth on beam (9.600) and fifth on bars (9.750).
Krista Walberer – who finished tied for sixth on floor – posted a 9.700 to lead the Falcons on the apparatus. Amanda Lievendag – another solid contributor on the night – ranked sixth on vault by turning in a 9.725. Victoria Heath also set a new career high by recording a 9.675 on vault.
Bowling Green will head to Ypsilanti, Michigan on Jan. 24 to open Mid-American Conference competition at Eastern Michigan. The meet is schedule to begin at 4 p.m. Following that meet, the Falcons will head to Washington, D.C. on Feb. 1 to take on George Washington.
