Findlay, Ohio / Geneva, Ohio – Nothing seems to be able to slow down the Bowling Green State University indoor track and field team, not even splitting the squad up. The Falcons took a set of distance runners to the SPIRE Midwest Indoor Track & Field Open in Geneva, Ohio and throwers and sprinters to the Findlay Open Friday night. BGSU continued to build on a strong early-season push with no fewer than seven personal bests, a Mid-American Conference automatic qualification and a climb up the national weight throw leaderboard.
At Findlay, the Falcons put on a show in the weight throw. Competing in the elite competition, senior Brooke Pleger moved up to 11th in the country with a toss of 67-feet-8. That throw was less than three inches shy of her personal best, a mark of 67-10.25 that also stands as the school record.
But Pleger was not the only Falcon with a big performance in the event. Redshirt sophomore Kori Reiser beat her own personal best by more than five feet, surpassing the MAC automatic qualifying mark, with a throw of 58-5.75. Redshirt sophomore Kayla Velasquez followed at 56-7.5, just four inches shy of her collegiate best.
"This was the best field that has been assembled in the country this year," BGSU throws coach Matt Conly said. "It was a great setup for Brooke to have a big meet early in the season and she was able to put together a great series and a big number for January. For Kori, she was able to put together what we have known was there. It's a meet that she can really build off of and put herself in position to compete for valuable points in a few weeks. Across the board, it was a really good meet for our throws group."
Senior Brittany Sinclair looked to be in mid-season form in the 400 Friday night, running a season-best 57.36 to win the event. That time ranks sixth in the MAC this year.
Junior Kera Lamotte and freshman Dorresha Green added solid performances in the 200. The duo placed first and second at Findlay and Lamotte's time of 25.73 seconds was a personal best. Green also had a PR with a time of 26.10.
Other event winners at Findlay included freshman Sydnee Matthew in the triple jump and Sinclair in the 60 prelims, although she did not run in the finals.
At SPIRE, five Falcons completed the 5000 and four set new personal best times. Junior Becca Rae won the event in a new personal best time of 17:37.36. Redshirt junior Andrea Alt was just five seconds behind at 17:42.78 for a second-place finish. Running unattached, freshman Elena Lancioni was third in 17:56.02 and junior Amanda Garlak was just behind with a PR time of 18:00.08. Redshirt freshman Allison Francis was fifth with a personal best time of 18:03.22.
BGSU has just two weekends remaining prior to the MAC Championships and the Falcons will head to the Akron Invitational in a week to compete Friday at 3 pm and Saturday at 9 am.
