Falcons Vault To No. 10 In National Rankings
October 12, 2015 | Ice Hockey
Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University hockey team took a big leap up the national polls Monday, climbing six spots to No. 10 in the USCHO.com top 20 poll and rising into the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine top 15 at No. 10.
Following a 2-0-0 weekend to open the season against in-state rival Ohio State, Bowling Green jumped into the top 10 in the USCHO.com poll, rising to the top of three ranked Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) teams. North Dakota is the new No. 1 in the poll with defending national champion Providence at No. 2. Six teams earned at least one first-place vote and the Falcons totaled 521 points without a first-place nod.
Minnesota State, the defending WCHA champion, is ranked No. 14 in the poll and Michigan Tech is No. 16. Miami, another in-state rival and opponent on BGSU's schedule, is No. 18. BGSU will face four other schools earning votes this year, including Bemidji State (60 votes), Clarkson (24 votes), Northern Michigan (six votes) and Ferris State (three votes).
BGSU climbed as high as No. 6 in the polls a year ago and was ranked in the top 10 as late as March 16, at No. 9. The Falcons ended the year ranked No. 18 in the USCHO.com poll.
In the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine preseason poll, the Falcons were the first time outside of the top 15 in the preseason poll. The Falcons, though, climbed all the way to No. 10 Monday. Like the USCHO.com poll, North Dakota and Providence were the top two vote getters. Minnesota State was the only other WCHA team ranked at No. 15.
Bowling Green will be in action three times this week, beginning with a Tuesday night contest at 1-0-1 Western Michigan at 7 pm. The Falcons will then face 0-1-0 Canisius on the road Friday and 0-2-0 RIT Saturday.
