Bowling Green, Ohio – After a week off last week, the Bowling Green State University men's golf team will return to competition this week on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 19-20, at the Mountaineer Intercollegiate hosted by West Virginia University at the Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, W. Va.
The inaugural Mountaineer Intercollegiate, which was originally set to follow the traditional 54-hole tournament format, has been shortened to 36 holes due to projected freezing low temperatures on Sunday night and an anticipated frost delay on Monday morning. The teams will play 18 holes on Monday, beginning with a shotgun start at 11:30 a.m., and then conclude the event with a final 18 holes of play on Tuesday with an adjusted shotgun start set for 9 a.m.
A total of 14 teams will tee-off at the first-year event with five programs ranked in the top-100 of Golfweek's most recent rankings, including BGSU ranked at No. 100 overall. Penn State (No. 15), UConn (No. 67), Missouri (No. 73), and Miami (Ohio) (No. 89) round out the other top-100 ranked programs set to compete at the tournament this week. The other participating teams include Cincinnati, Akron, Mississippi State, Toledo, Towson, Marshall, Seton Hall, St. John's and West Virginia.
The Pete Dye Golf Club is ranked No. 45 on Golf Digest's ranking of America's 100 Greatest Courses and comes in at No. 9 on Golfweek's ranking of Best Modern Courses. The course runs 7,353 yards as a par-72 and previously played host to a PGA Tour/web.com event for five years from 2004-09.
"The Pete Dye Golf Club is a top-notch golf course and we are really excited to get the chance to compete this week on such a great course," commented head coach Kevin Farrell. "This event, although in just its first year, is a top-class event with a great course and a very strong field. Our guys will be tested this week for sure."
Coach Farrell will send out the same lineup as two weeks ago at the Cleveland State Invitational in Jose Narro, Pablo Heredia Iglesias, Brett Rinker, Mitchell Kontak and Trey Walker, while Cameron Michalak will tee-off as an individual.
Narro has been the top-Falcon in two of three tournaments thus far this season for BGSU, having posted three top-15 place finishes overall. The junior, who is currently ranked as one of the top amateur golfers in Mexico by the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR), has turned in 54-hole tournament scores of 202, -11 under par, 213, -3 under par, and 218, +2, so far this fall season. Narro is ranked third overall in the MAC with a team-best stroke average of 70.33 overall heading into play this week.
Coming off his best intercollegiate performance thus far in his first year at BGSU, Heredia Iglesias will look to continue his strong play this week having posted rounds of 72, 70 and 70 over his last three 18-hole rounds of play. The freshman carded a 54-hole score of 212, -4 under par, last time out at the Cleveland State Invitational on Oct. 5-6 to lead the Falcons with a fifth-place individual finish.
Rinker has played consistent golf all fall for the Falcons having recorded 54-hole scores of 213, even par, 217, +1, and 218, +2, in his three events. The junior, who carded a low round 69 over the final round of play at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational in September, has posted two top-20 place finishes over his last two events with a 16th-place showing at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate and a 14th-place finish at the Cleveland State Invitational. He is second on the team with a stroke average of 72.00 over nine rounds of play.
The Falcons' Kontak will tee-off in his fourth straight event this fall season having played at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational, William H. Tucker Intercollegiate and the Cleveland State Invitational. The sophomore recorded a career-low 54-hole score of 210, -3 under par, at the Marshall Invitational to open up the season, which placed him in a 16th-place overall.
Playing in his second straight event for the Falcons, Walker will look to improve from his 54-hole score of 230, +14, in his first-ever intercollegiate event on Oct. 5-6 at the Cleveland State Invitational. The freshman finished the tournament with back-to-back rounds of 75, +3, after shooting a first round 80, +8.
Michalak will compete as an individual at the inaugural event this week. The sophomore posted a 54-hole score of 215, +2, to finish in 36th-place overall at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational and then shot a three-round combined score of 234, +18, at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in New Mexico.
This fall season, BGSU has two top-five team finishes, a second-place showing at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational, and most recently a fourth-place finish at the Cleveland State Invitational earlier this month.
