Rinker Paces Falcons on Day One of the Mountaineer Intercollegiate

Bridgeport, W. Va. – BGSU junior golfer Brett Rinker carded a Falcon low round 70, -2 under par, on Monday to lead the men's golf team to a fourth-place showing after one round of play at the inaugural Mountaineer Intercollegiate hosted by West Virginia University at the Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, W. Va.
As a team, the Falcons carded a round of 299, +11, to end day one in a tie for fourth-place overall with Cincinnati in the 14-team field. Bowling Green is just five strokes behind the first round leader in No. 11 Penn State who leads the tournament field with a score of 294, +6.
"The guys played really well today on a very tough course," stated head coach Kevin Farrell. "The way they played today put us in place to have a chance to win the event with a solid final round of play tomorrow."
Rinker wrapped up the first round of play with six birdies and eight pars to put himself in a tie for second-place overall with a round of 70, -2 under par. The junior is just one shot off the individual lead heading into the final round of play on Tuesday.
Concluding day one in a tie for 14th-place overall was Pablo Heredia Iglesias with a round of 74, +2. The freshman totaled three birdies and 10 pars over his first 18-holes of play.
Behind Iglesias was Trey Walker with a round of 77, +5, Jose Narro with a score of 78, +6, and Mitchell Kontak with a 79, +7. Walker tallied four birdies and eight pars to place in a tie for 35th-place overall, while Narro posted one birdie and a team-high 11 pars to sit in a tie for 46th. Kontak finished in a tie for 56th-place overall with two birdies and eight pars over his first round of play.
Playing as an individual, Cameron Michalak shot an 80, +8, on Monday to wrap up day one in a tie for 68th-place. The sophomore carded two birdies and eight pars.
Connecticut (295) and Miami (Ohio) (298) sit at second and third-place overall in front of the Falcons heading into the final round of play tomorrow morning.
The final round of play is set for a 9 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday morning.
