BGSU’s Rinker Takes Second; Falcons Finish Eighth at the Mountaineer Intercollegiate

Bridgeport, W. Va. – Bowling Green State University men's golfer Brett Rinker carded a second straight 70, -2 under par, on Tuesday to finish in second-place overall at the Mountaineer Intercollegiate. The Falcons finished in eighth-place overall in the team standings at the inaugural event hosted by West Virginia University at the Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, W. Va.
Bowling Green posted rounds of 299 and 304 to place in eighth overall out of the 14-team field with a two-round combined team score of 603, +27. The Falcons finished ahead of Cincinnati, West Virginia, Toledo, Seton Hall, Marshall and St. John's.
"Brett played great over the two rounds. He hit greens and made putts. He has been consistent all fall for us and he continued to take steps forward this week in his overall game," stated head coach Kevin Farrell. "This was a great event with a very tough course. You can tell by our scores. We played some holes well and others we did not. We are already preparing for our next event later this month with the expectations to win it."
Rinker turned in a runner-up performance at the two-day event with back-to-back rounds of 70, -2 under par, and a 36-hole score of 140, -4 under par. The junior recorded an eagle, 10 birdies and 17 pars over his 36-holes of play. Rinker, who eagled the par-5 No. 8 on Tuesday, finished the tournament tied for second with a par-4 scoring average of 3.95, -1 under par, and tied for fourth with a par-5 scoring average of 4.63, -3 under par. He also finished the tournament tied for second with 10 birdies.
Freshman Trey Walker registered his best 36-hole tournament score of his young career at BGSU with a score of 153, +9, to finish in a tie for 37th-place overall. The Bowling Green product totaled eight birdies and 17 pars over rounds of 77, +5, and 76, +4, for the event.
Fellow first-year Falcon Pablo Heredia Iglesias carded rounds of 74, +2, and 80, +8, to place in a tie for 43rd overall with a score of 154, +10, while junior Jose Narro posted scores of 78, +6, and 79, +7, for a 36-hole score of 157, +13, to put him in a tie for 58th. Iglesias finished with seven birdies and 15 pars overall, while Narro tallied three birdies and a team-high 21 pars at the inaugural event.
Rounding out the lineup for the Falcons was Mitchell Kontak with two straight rounds of 79, +7, and a combined 36-hole score of 158, +14. The sophomore, who had two birdies and 19 pars over his two rounds, placed in a tie for 60th-place overall.
Matching Kontak's 36-hole score of 158, +14, was fellow sophomore Cameron Michalak who played as an individual. Michalak finished in a tie for 60th overall with rounds of 80, +8, and 78, +6, which included four birdies and 17 pars.
No. 11 nationally ranked Penn State recorded rounds of 294 and 291 to take the team title with a score of 585, +9.
Connecticut (595), Mississippi State (596), Towson (598) and Missouri (599) rounded out the top-five of the team leaderboard.
BGSU will return to the links on Oct. 25-27 for the Old Dominion/Kilmarlic Collegiate Invitational held at the Kilmarlic Golf Course at the Outer Banks, N.C.
