BGSU Volleyball Drops MAC Road Match at Ball State on Saturday

Muncie, Ind. – BGSU freshman middle hitter Madeline Brandewie matched her career-high in kills, as the Bowling Green State University volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss on the road in MAC play at Ball State on Saturday night at Worthen Arena in Muncie, Ind.
Ball State swept the Falcons by scores of 25-16, 25-22 and 25-11 in the MAC cross-divisional match up.
After posting 14.0 blocks last night as a team, BGSU totaled just 2.0 blocks on the night versus Ball State who hit .360 overall for the match.
Brandewie tallied a team-high eight kills, matching her career-high, to lead the Falcons offensively, while Alyssa Maloney and Nicole Slimko finished with six and five kills apiece, respectively. Jelena Sunjic, who had her streak of consecutive matches with double digit kills snapped at 10, ended with four kills, four digs and two service aces. Setter Katie Scholten posted 23 assists, two digs, two service aces and two kills on the night.
Ball State's Mackenzie Kitchel registered a match-high 12 kills on a .588 attack percentage, while Alex Fuelling and Kelly Hopkins each chipped in with eight kills apiece. Setter Jenna Spadafora picked up 34 assists, eight digs and seven kills, while Kati Vasalakis registered a match-high nine digs in the win for the Cardinals.
BGSU opened up the match with a kill from Slimko and a block from the duo of Sunjic and Maloney to take a 2-0 lead early.
The Falcons had timely points to stay in front of the Cardinals for the next several services to take a 6-4 lead on a Ball State attack error.
Ball State tied the set up at 6-6 with two straight points, only to see the Falcons use kills from Brandewie and Sunjic to pull back in front by two at 8-6.
The two teams traded points back-and-forth until an ace from Fuelling tied the set up again at 9-9.
The service ace was the first of a 6-1 run by the home standing Cardinals who flew out to a 14-10 lead on another service ace, this time from Bailey Baumer, to force BGSU to call a timeout.
BGSU couldn't halt the Ball State momentum, as the Cardinals outscored the Falcons 7-2 to extend its lead to 21-12 on a Carly Cappello ace.
Three straight Brandewie kills and an ace from Sunjic put BGSU within five at 21-16, before four straight Ball State kills handed the Cardinals the 25-16 opening set win.
The Orange and Brown again took a 1-0 lead with a Scholten service ace to start the second set. However, Ball State used another scoring barrage to take a 6-2 lead on back-to-back Falcon errors to force a BGSU timeout.
After Ball State took an 8-4 lead on a Falcon error, BGSU used a kill from Scholten to string together five straight points and retake the lead at 9-8 on a Sunjic service ace.
Following a Ball State timeout, BGSU took advantage of a Cardinal attack error to double its lead at 10-8 and then picked up two straight kills from Sunjic and Maloney to take its largest lead of the set at 12-9.
BGSU led by as much as three at 16-13, 17-14 and 18-15, yet saw the lead disappear with a 4-1 spurt by the home team who tied the set up at 19-19.
A BGSU kill, followed by a two straight Ball State kills gave the Cardinals a 21-20 lead.
The Falcons tied the set up at 21-21, yet BGSU could not regain the lead as Ball State held off the Falcons for the 25-22 set win.
With their backs against the wall down 2-0 in the match, BGSU struggled to start the third set and fell behind 8-2 on a back-to-back errors.
Following a BGSU timeout, the Falcons closed the gap to within three at 10-7 on a Slimko spike, only to see Ball State score three straight points and pull back out in front by six at 13-7.
An 8-0 run by Ball State gave the home team a 22-9 lead and propelled the Cardinals to the 25-11 third set win and the 3-0 sweep of the Falcons.
Bowling Green (5-18, 1-9 MAC) will return home to host both Kent State and Ohio next weekend on Oct. 30 & 31 at the Stroh Center.
