October 08, 2015 | Ice Hockey
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University senior goalie Tommy Burke has been named one of 20 goalies on the 2015 Mike Richter Award Watch List. The Mike Richter award annually honors the most outstanding goaltender in NCAA Division I men's hockey. The winner of the third annual award will be announced at the 2016 NCAA Men's Frozen Four in Tampa, Fla.
Burke is one of six seniors on the watch list and one of four goalies from the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), joining Bemidji State's Michael Bitzer, Alabama Huntsville's Carmine Guerriero and Michigan Tech's Jamie Phillips.
Burke has been the team's top goaltender in each of the past two seasons and was a WCHA All-Academic Team member last year. He started 22 games in goal with a 14-6-3 record and a school-record 2.18 goals against average. He allowed just 10 power play goals on the season and his .920 save percentage ranks second in school history for a single-season. In WCHA action, he was even better with a 12-3-2 record, a 2.11 goals against average and a .922 save percentage. In the postseason, he notched it up even more with a .923 save percentage.
Burke was named WCHA Defensive Player of the Week a year ago after making 62 saves in a pair of 3-2 wins at Alaska. He tied his career high with 43 saves in a 4-1 win at Ferris State and made 38 saves in game of the WCHA Tournament Round, a 3-2 overtime victory against Northern Michigan.
Goalies on the Mike Richter Award watch list were chosen by members of Let's Play Hockey, utilizing both past performance and future potential. The finalists and winners will be selected by a committee of coaches, scouts and members of the media.
Bowling Green, ranked No. 16 in the country, will open the regular season Friday at Ohio State for a 7:05 pm start. The Falcons will play their home opener the next night against the Buckeyes at 7:37 pm.
