Falcons Rise In National Polls
November 30, 2015 | Ice Hockey
Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University hockey team is ranked No. 14 in the country in today's USCHO.com top 20 poll, up one spot from a week ago. The Falcons also cracked into the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine top 15 poll at No. 15.
Bowling Green, which has won five in a row, swept Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) rival Northern Michigan 2-1 and 4-3 in overtime over the weekend. The Falcons won Saturday's series finale in miraculous fashion as sophomore Mitch McLain scored short-handed with just five seconds remaining in the five minute extra period.
BGSU is 9-3-3 overall and 6-2-2 in WCHA play, extending its home unbeaten streak to 11 games, tied for the longest in the country. The Falcons have been ranked in the USCHO.com top 20 poll all year, beginning the year at No. 16 and rising as high as No. 10. Bowling Green was in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine top 15 poll for four weeks in a row earlier this year.
The Falcons are the highest rated WCHA team in each of the human polls. BGSU is currently ranked No. 21 in the PairWise Rankings, which mimics the method of selection for the NCAA Division I men's hockey national tournament. The team also ranks No. 21 in the RPI and No. 22 in the KRACH, which implements a sophisticated mathematical model known as the Bradley-Terry rating system.
Bowling Green will be home for the third consecutive weekend, hosting current WCHA leader and defending WCHA champion Minnesota State Friday and Saturday. Both games begin at 7:07 pm in the BGSU Ice Arena.
