AKRON, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University swimming and diving program concluded action at the 2015 Zippy Invitational on Sunday. Sunday was highlighted by Jordan Bullock's school record in the 200 fly, a Natalie Criswell win in the 1650 freestyle and a 'B' cut qualifying swim by Kristin Filby in the 200 Breast.
"The team had a great weekend competing in the pool and on the boards," head coach Matt Ense said. "Claire Stam had a great meet on the diving boards and continues to work on higher degree of difficulty dives before conference. In the pool, the team had some breakout swims with Alex Poitinger and Natalie Criswell winning events, while Maya Skorupski and Jordan Bullock broke school records. We have some big things to take away from this weekend but we also have quite a few things we need to improve on if we want to compete with the top teams in the conference."
Â
Bullock, a senior from Zeeland, Mich., set a school record in the 200 fly with a time of 2:00.01. She previously owned the school record with a time of 2:00.11 set two seasons ago. Bullock finished second in the event behind Akron's Erin Seiler, who set a meet record. Bullock was joined by teammate Nicole Hranchook, who finished third.
Â
In the 1,650 freestyle, Criswell finished first with a season-best time of 17:01.92. She was joined in the finals by four other teammates who scored points – Alex Poitinger (second), Tara Capouch, Mary Edwards and Hannah Albion.
Â
Filby turned in a 'B' cut standard-swim in the 200 breast on Sunday during the A finals. Her time of 2:14.68 pushed her to a second-place finish. She was joined by teammates Emily Verbrugge and Christin Swanepoel in the finals.
Â
The Falcons also saw strong swims come in the 200 back and 100 free. In the 200 back, Elodie Schreiber swam a season-best for the Falcons with a time of 1:59.39. Maria Galic and Maya Skorupski joined Schreiber in the event. In the 100 free, Kayla Effinger was the only Falcon to qualify for the A finals, finishing seventh.
Â
With final exams looming, the Falcons will take some time out of the pool to focus on studies for the rest of the semester. BGSU is next scheduled to compete on Jan. 22 at Miami in a duel meet. Over the holiday break, the Orange and Brown will take a training trip to Naples, Fla.
