Five Falcons Named to Academic All-MAC Team for Volleyball

Cleveland, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team had five Falcons earn a spot on the 2015 Academic All-MAC Team in Delaney Arkeilpane, Nicole Slimko, Katie Scholten, Madeline Garda and Alyssa Maloney, it was announced on Wednesday, Dec. 9, by the league office.
It is the second straight academic postseason honor for juniors Arkeilpane, Garda and Maloney, who were all named to the 2014 Academic All-MAC Team last year. It is the first MAC academic honor for sophomores Slimko and Scholten in their first year of eligibility.
This marks the second straight season in which head coach Danijela Tomic's team has had five student-athletes named to the Academic All-MAC Team.
To qualify for the Academic All-MAC Teams, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests scheduled or completed in the particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
Delaney Arkeilpane – Junior, Visual Communication Technology, 3.772 GPA
Named to the Academic All-MAC Team last year as a sophomore, Arkeilpane played in 27 matches on the season as a defensive specialist. The junior posted a perfect 1.000 reception percentage eight times on the year and registered a reception percentage of .950 or higher in a total of 15 different matches on the season. She had five digs or more 13 times on the year and totaled a season-high 12 digs in the home win at Akron. Arkeilpane stepped up as a team player to serve as the setter for the first time ever in the regular season finale, totaling a career-high 12 set assists versus NIU. She also tallied a service ace in the Battle of I-75 match at Toledo.
Nicole Slimko – Sophomore, Neuroscience, 3.729 GPA
Slimko played in all 29 matches and all 112 sets on the year for BGSU, tallying double digit kills in 17 matches on the season. She was second on the team with 358.0 points and with a total of 328 kills, an average of 2.93 per set, which was ranked ninth overall in the MAC for the season. The outside hitter totaled 48 total blocks, an average of 0.43 per set, and 53 digs on the season. Slimko picked up a 26 kills in the win over Cleveland State and also had 20 kills in the home win over IPFW. She recorded 16 kills versus Eastern Michigan and 15 kills at home versus Akron and Miami (Ohio). On the season, Slimko hit over .345 in six different matches, including at Akron and at home against NIU. Defensively, she posted a season-high seven digs versus NIU and registered four total blocks vs. Pitt and EMU. She also turned in a perfect 1.000 reception percentage in 16 different matches on the year.
Katie Scholten – Sophomore, Health Science, 3.666 GPA
Named to both the Blue Raider Bash (MTSU) and the Panther Invitation (Pitt) All-Tournament Teams in non-conference play, Scholten eclipsed the 1,000 career assists mark in her first year as the setter in 2015. The sophomore totaled a team-high 1,027 assists in 28 matches on the season, missing the final match of the year due to an injury. Scholten had a team-high and ranked fifth in the MAC on the season with an average of 9.42 assists per set. She was tied for second on the team with 25 service aces and was fourth for BGSU with 193 digs, an average of 1.77 per set. The first-year Falcon setter also totaled 41 total blocks, 76 kills and an attack percent of .215 on the year. She posted a career-high eight kills at Toledo, hitting a perfect 1.000 attack percentage and recorded a career-high 55 assists in the home win over Kent State. Scholten registered six double-doubles on the year in assists and digs, and tallied 40 set assists or more 10 times on the year.
Madeline Garda – Junior, Inclusive Early Childhood, 3.616 GPA
Garda, who was also named to the 2015 Academic All-MAC Team, played in all 29 matches and all 112 sets on the season on the back line for the Falcons. She was second on the team with 327 digs and had an average of 2.92 digs per set on the year. The junior was tied for second on the team with 25 service aces and also had 26 set assists on the season, including a career-high 14 assists in the regular season finale when she was forced to play setter due to injuries. The defensive specialist, picked up a season-high three service aces versus Eastern Michigan and again at Buffalo. She totaled double digit digs in 17 different matches on the year, including recording a season-high 25 digs versus Indiana and in the win over Notre Dame. Garda also tallied a perfect 1.000 reception percentage in 14 matches on the year.
Alyssa Maloney – Junior, Health Science, 3.565 GPA
Tabbed the MAC East Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 1, Maloney also earned a spot on the Indiana Invitational All-Tournament Team in September. Maloney played in all 29 matches and all 112 sets on the season in the middle for the Falcons. The junior was eighth in the MAC in both service aces per set at 0.29 and in blocks per set at 0.96 on the year. She led the Falcons with 33 service aces and also had a team-high 107 total blocks on the season. Maloney was third on the team with 227 kills, an average of 2.03 per set, and in points with 321.5 on the year. The middle blocker had two double-doubles on the year, posted double digit kills nine times and recorded a season-high 14 kills in the home win over Kent State. She also had 13 kills versus Miami and 12 kills in the win over Notre Dame. Maloney picked up a career-high five service aces in the home win over Akron and registered a career-high 10 digs versus Kent State. She totaled a career-high 10.0 total blocks in the win over the Irish and had 5.0 total blocks or more in 10 different matches. Maloney was also named to the 2014 Academic All-MAC Team as a sophomore last season.
