DEKALB, Ill. – For the third consecutive meet, the Bowling Green State University gymnastics team earned a team score that ranks inside of the top 10 in program history. This time, the Falcons scored a 195.200 Sunday (Feb. 15) afternoon at the Convocation Center in DeKalb, Illinois. BGSU's 195.200 bested Alaska Anchorage's 190.925, while Northern Illinois swept the triangular by scoring a program-high 195.650.
The Falcons have now defeated Alaska Anchorage twice this year, as the Orange and Brown placed second only to Brigham Young at the Ozone Collegiate Classic on Jan. 17 in Knoxville, Tennessee. With the split, Bowling Green inches to 5-5 (1-2 MAC), while Northern Illinois improves to 7-2 (3-1 MAC) and Alaska Anchorage falls to 4-6 (1-0 MPSF).
"While we didn't win, this road meet was a step in the right direction," head coach Kerrie Turner said. "We have struggled on the road so far, so it was great to see the team fight and earn a 195.200. That will benefit our regional qualifying score greatly. We were a bit shaky on bars to start, but the team never gave up on those routines, and we built our score from there on out.
"Alyssa Nocella continued to be a force, winning the all-around today. I was also excited about Lauren Feely's career high on floor and season high on vault. In addition, our floor exercise team stepped up with a 49.125 today. This definitely gives us the momentum we needed going into our meet at Central Michigan next weekend. Our focus will be refining the details of the routines and continuing to create the most competitive lineups possible."
As a team, Bowling Green won beam with a 48.825 and floor with a season-best 49.125. The 49.125 is the highest score on any apparatus for BGSU this season, while the 48.825 is the second best score that the Falcons have earned on the event in 2015. The Falcons tied for first on vault with Northern Illinois with a season-best 48.950, and finished second on bars with a 48.300.
Individually, junior Alyssa Nocella won the all-around for the third consecutive meet by registering a 39.075. Nocella finished fourth on beam (9.800), tied for fifth on floor (9.825), tied for seventh on vault (9.750) and tied for seventh on bars (9.700).
Sophomore Lauren Feely – competing in her home state – had a career day. The 2013 MAC Freshman of the Year won vault by recording a season-high 9.875. Feely also posted a career-high 9.850 on floor to place tied for third. Freshman Laura Mitchell – who also scored a 9.700 on bars – finished tied for second on beam with a 9.825.
Two other Falcons – sophomore Victoria Heath and freshman Jordan Rae – also notched career highs on floor. Heath – who has now established a career high in all seven of BGSU's meets in 2015 – scored a 9.825 to place tied for fifth, while Rae finished tied for ninth with a 9.800. Heath also posted a career high on vault by earning a 9.750 to finish tied for seventh.
Sophomore Rachel Reis made the most of her competition, as she scored a season-high 9.725 on bars to finish sixth on the event.
Many others contributed for the Falcons, as well. On vault, senior Amanda Lievendag (9.800) placed fourth, while fellow senior Jamilah Ali (9.775) finished tied for fifth. On beam, Rae finished tied for fifth with a 9.775, while junior Caroline Ellingboe (9.725) finished seventh and senior Gina Locigno (9.700) placed eighth. Locigno (9.825) then finished tied for fifth on floor, and Rae (9.800) placed tied for ninth.
The Orange and Brown will be on the road again next week, as they will travel to Mount Pleasant, Michigan for a Sunday, Feb. 22 dual meet with Central Michigan. The competition is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. The Falcons will then return home to Anderson Arena to face Western Michigan on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 4 p.m.
