Ben Murphy Named WCHA Offensive Player Of The Week
February 09, 2015 | Ice Hockey
Bowling Green, Ohio - Junior Ben Murphy was named Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Offensive Player of the Week today after scoring two goals and an assist in BGSU Hockey's weekend sweep of defending WCHA regular season champion Ferris State.
Murphy led the Falcons to a pair of come-from-behind wins, scoring the game-tying goal in each contest. Friday, he outsprinted a Ferris State defender and slapped a backhander over goaltender C.J. Motte to tie the score at 1-1 in the middle stages of the second period. The goal was his 50th career point and helped the Falcons to the 2-1 win.
Looking for the sweep Saturday, he posted another game-tying goal, this time in the third period. With the Falcons trailing 2-1, he picked up a loose puck in front of goal and slammed it home to tie the score just 5:49 into the final frame. Teammate Pierre-Luc Mercier would score the game-winner just 80 seconds later in the 3-2 win. Murphy added an assist on Bowling Green's first goal Saturday and he finished with a +3 on-ice rating. He took four shots over the course of the two games.
With the wins, BGSU improved to 17-6-5 on the season and 13-4-3 in the WCHA. The Falcons are ranked No. 8 in the country in both the USCHO.com and USA Today/US Hockey Magazine rankings, as well as the Pairwise ranking system. Bowling Green will play two more games with Ferris State this weekend, facing the Bulldogs at 7:07 pm Friday and Saturday in Big Rapids, Mich.
