Raleigh, N.C. – Distance runners Becca Rae and Mackenzie McMillin paced the Falcons on the opening day of the outdoor season Friday. The Falcons recorded six top 10 finishes at one of the biggest and strongest collegiate meets of the weekend, the Raleigh Relays hosted by North Carolina State.
Rae and McMillin each set impressive personal bests in separate distance events with Rae doing so in the 5000 and McMillin in the 10000. Rae ran in the first event of the day and set a new personal best by more than 36 seconds. Her time of 17:07.60 bested her previous career fastest time of 17:43.72 from a year ago and was just 0.21 seconds shy of earning a Mid-American Conference automatic qualifying mark in the event. She is just the eighth female in program history to run the 5000 that quickly and it is the 10th fastest time in BGSU history.
McMillin was just as impressive in the longer event with a time of 36:14.29. She also moved into eighth place in program history in her event and ran a time that was more than 100 seconds faster than her previous personal best of 37:56.61 set at last year's MAC Championships. In fact, the 36:14.29 is the fastest recorded time for a Falcon since 1998.
On top of her strong effort, the Falcons had strong performances throughout the team's lineup. Sophomore Makenzie Wheat, an NCAA regional qualifier a year ago, finished second in the shot put with a distance of 46-feet-11.75.
Senior Brittany Sinclair was ninth in the 400 with a time of 56.21. That mark was less than a half-second shy of the MAC automatic qualifying mark. Redshirt sophomore Kori Reiser had a strong showing in the discus to open her redshirt sophomore season at 147-1 for seventh place. Reiser was an NCAA regional qualifier in both the discus and hammer throw a year ago.
As well, junior Alicia Arnold placed seventh in the 100 at 12.24 seconds and she also finished ninth in the invitational portion of the long jump at 18-1. Sophomore Raven Porter tied for sixth in the high jump with a distance of 5-1. In the 1500, Maria Meredith set a new personal best with a time of 4:41.66 amongst a strong and deep field of well over 100 runners.
Bowling Green will compete in day two of the Raleigh Relays Saturday. The Falcons being competition at noon.
