BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Junior Alyssa Nocella, a member of the Bowling Green State University gymnastics team, will compete at the 2015 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Regional Championships this Saturday (April 4) at St. John Arena in Columbus, Ohio. Sophomore Lauren Feely (vault) and freshman Laura Mitchell (beam) will also be making the trip, and will serve as alternates for their respective events. The competition begins at 6 p.m.
Nocella joins Megan Harrington (2012-14) and Breanne Guy (2008-10) as the only Falcons across the last 15 years to qualify to compete at the NCAA Regionals over three straight years. Ohio State, Arizona, Central Michigan, Kentucky, Michigan and UCLA are the six schools competing as a team at the regional.
"I am really excited to have the chance to compete at regionals again this year! It is always a great experience to compete in that kind of environment," Nocella said. "It's always really loud with so many teams, and all of their fans there."
The 2013 MAC balance beam champion was named First Team All-MAC for the second straight year this season, and was named MAC Gymnast of the Week on Feb. 9 for her performances against Ohio and Ball State. Against the Cardinals, Nocella scored career highs on the all-around (39.350) and on floor (9.925). Her floor score ranks fifth all-time in program history, while her all-around score ranks third best in BGSU gymnastics history.
"I am so excited for Alyssa to compete at the NCAA Regional Championships this Saturday," head coach Kerrie Turner said. "Alyssa has been a steady all-around competitor for our program, and she has really put together some outstanding meets this season. I am especially pleased that Alyssa was the highest ranked qualifier that did not qualify with a team. That really shows her level of excellence."
In total, Nocella won the all-around at six competitions in 2015, including a stretch in February where she took home the crown at four consecutive meets. Nocella is the only Falcon to have generated an all-around score in all 12 of Bowling Green's competitions this season.
"Our goal is for Alyssa to have a clean meet, and give her best effort to qualify to NCAA Nationals," Turner said. "It can be quite difficult competing without your team, but Alyssa has experienced this meet over the past two years. And she understands how to approach this event with great motivation. It will be an exciting competition."
As a freshman, Nocella finished 11th at regionals in the all-around. And scored a 9.850 on floor – the highest score from a Falcon at regionals since 1999. At last year's regional at LSU, Nocella posted another 9.850 on floor, and registered a 39.150 in the all-around.
"This year, since I am competing at Ohio State, I know most of my teammates are planning to drive down to watch the competition and help cheer me on," said Nocella. "That is going to be really exciting as well."
