The Falcons went on the road last weekend, falling by a 6-1 score against the University of Akron on Friday (March 27), then dropping a 7-0 decision to the University at Buffalo two days later in Western New York.
On Friday, freshman Megan Miller continued a successful season with a win over the Zips' Martina Zerbola at the number-one singles flight. Miller, a native of Sylvania, Ohio (Northview HS), won two-straight top-flight matches before falling on Sunday at UB.
The doubles point was very closely contested on both Friday vs. the Zips and Sunday against the Bulls. At Akron, Miller and sophomore Harley Hutchison lost by a narrow 6-4 final at the top flight. The BG team of sophomore Brittany Plaszewski and freshman Emily Witt were locked in a 4-4 deadlock at the second flight when their match was halted.
On Sunday, both teams were embroiled in a tight battle, as the Plaszewski/Witt tandem lost by a narrow 7-5 margin. Meanwhile, Hutchison and Miller were tied, 6-6, when their match was stopped.
On the season, Miller leads the Falcons with totals of eight singles wins and 15 overall victories in her first collegiate season.
Miller played at the top singles flight in each of the five matches in the month of March. Hutchison has played at the second flight during that time, with Witt and Plaszewski at the third and fourth flights, respectively.
Sophomore Antonina Farrar was in action at the fifth flight, while freshman Sydney Seeley was in the lineup at the sixth flight during each of the last four matches.
Elkin and assistant coach Stephanie Dalmacio have seen their lineup affected by injuries all season long. Only Farrar and Witt have been in the singles lineup for all 13 dual matches to date, and only Witt has been in both the singles and doubles lineups in every spring match.
Toledo enters the weekend with an overall record of 12-6, and the Rockets are 3-1 in MAC play to date. Last weekend, UT split a pair of tight 4-3 matches, losing at Northern Illinois on Friday (March 27) before returning home to defeat Ball State on Sunday (March 29). In the first weekend of MAC play, the Rockets defeated Buffalo and Akron at home, by scores of 5-2 and 4-3, respectively. Last season, head coach Tracy Mauntler's team finished with records of 14-7 overall and 5-3 in MAC regular-season play, tying for fourth in the conference standings. Toledo was predicted to finish fifth in the MAC in 2015 by the league's head coaches, according to the preseason poll.
The Falcons lead Toledo, 26-17, in the all-time series between the teams, but the Rockets won last year's meeting to snap a four-match BGSU series winning streak. UT captured a 4-3 decision at Shadow Valley Tennis Club (March 28, 2014) in last season's match. In that dual, the Rockets won a doubles point which saw two of the matches decided by 8-6 outcomes and the third require a tiebreaker. In singles play, three of the six matches went to the maximum three sets, two others went to a 'breaker in the second set, and the sixth match saw both sets end in 7-5 scores. Two years ago, in the Falcons' last home match vs. the Rockets, BG picked up a 6-1 win at the PTC (March 22, 2013).
Only two players on the 2014-15 BGSU roster, Hutchison and junior Drew Fillis, saw action in last year's UT match. Fillis played at the fourth singles and top doubles flights, while Hutchison was in the lineup at the third doubles and sixth singles flights. After playing a pair of doubles matches in this year's opening tournament (Sept. 12-13 at Miami), Fillis has missed the rest of the season to date due to injury.
Following this weekend's match, the Falcons will prepare for a home dual against the defending MAC champion and preseason favorite. BGSU will host Miami on Saturday, April 11, and the Falcons then end the regular season with matches at Ball State (April 17) and Eastern Michigan (April 19).
