Hillsdale, Mich. and Ashland, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University track and field team won four events at the Gina Relays and Makenzie Wheat set a new personal best in the shot put at the Ashland Alumni Open as the Falcons closed out a pivotal weekend with strong performances Saturday.
Â
Wheat, who had twice thrown the shot put 49-feet-7 in the last month, climbed to fourth in the Mid-American Conference with a new personal best effort of 50-6 at the Ashland Alumni Open. With the throw, she moves into second-place all-time in BGSU history in the event, trailing only Kerri McClung, who threw as far as 52-8.25 in 2005. Wheat advanced to the NCAA East Region preliminary round as a freshman a year ago with a best toss of 48-4.5 and should be comfortably in the field again this year.
"Makenzie continues to make a huge impact on the BGSU Track & Field record book at such a young age," BGSU head coach Lou Snelling said. "It's exciting that she has stamped her ticket to the NCAA preliminary round as well."
Â
At the Gina Relays, junior Alicia Arnold won the championship heat in both the 100 and 200 with times of 12.10 and 24.73, while freshman Kyla Paster won the triple jump with a leap of 37-7.75. Sophomore Gabrielle Edwards won the championship heat of the 400 with a new personal best time of 57.44 seconds and added a personal best time in the 200 of 25.17 to finish behind only team Arnold.
Â
Freshmen Dorresha Green and Cortisha Short also established new personal bests. Green posted her best wind legal time in the 100 to finish third in the championship heat at 12.48 seconds, which was better than the 12.55 she posted earlier this year. Short was more than a full second faster than her previous best in the 400, placing fourth in the championship heat of the event in 58.83 seconds.
Â
Freshman Libby Burkhart also set a new personal best in the javelin at Ashland. She threw the apparatus 107-7 to better the 104-1.5 she heaved the javelin at the Toledo Dual.
Â
Bowling Green will return to action Friday and Saturday at the Jesse Owens Track Classic, hosted by Ohio State.
