BGSU closes home schedule with Saturday dual vs. the RedHawks
The Bowling Green State University tennis team closes the home portion of the 2014-15 schedule this weekend. The Falcons of head coach Olga Elkin face Miami University on Saturday afternoon (April 11), with the dual match scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Keefe Courts on the BGSU campus. In the event of inclement weather, the match would be held indoors at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.

The Falcons played just one match last weekend, battling the University of Toledo through a closely-contested doubles point on Friday (April 3) at the Perrysburg Tennis Center. UT got a win at the second doubles flight, but at the number-three flight, BGSU walk-ons Antonina Farrar and Sydney Seeley played a stellar match before falling by a narrow 7-5 score. The top flight saw sophomore Harley Hutchison and freshman Megan Miller tied with their UT opponents, 5-5, when the match was halted. The Rockets won all six singles matches, including a pair of narrow battles at the first and fourth flights, to come away with the win.
Miller leads the Falcons with totals of eight singles wins and 15 overall victories in her first collegiate season.
Miller has played at the top singles flight in each of the six matches since the beginning of March. Hutchison has played at the second flight during that time, with freshman Emily Witt and sophomore Brittany Plaszewski at the third and fourth flights, respectively.
Farrar has been in action at the fifth flight, while freshman Sydney Seeley has been in the lineup at the sixth flight during each of the last five matches.
Elkin and assistant coach Stephanie Dalmacio have seen their lineup affected by injuries all season long. Only Farrar and Witt have been in the singles lineup for all 14 dual matches to date, and only Witt has been in both the singles and doubles lineups in every spring match.
Miami enters the weekend with an overall record of 12-6, and the RedHawks are a perfect 6-0 in MAC play to date. Last weekend, MU downed Toledo, 7-0, for the team's seventh consecutive victory. The RedHawks' 12 wins this spring include victories over a pair of nationally-ranked foes in Furman and Wisconsin. Last year, Miami finished 17-7 overall and 7-1 in MAC action, and won both the MAC's regular-season and tournament titles. Yana S. Carollo is in her first year at the helm of the RedHawks, who were predicted to win the MAC again in 2015 by the league's head coaches, according to the preseason poll.
The Falcons trail Miami, 39-5, in the all-time series between the teams, and the RedHawks have won each of the last 10 meetings. Last season, the Falcons won the doubles point, but host MU rallied back to capture five singles contests en route to a 5-2 win in Oxford (April 19, 2014). Two years ago, both of the teams' matchups – including the last meeting in Northwest Ohio – were decided by narrow 4-3 margins, with MU winning the regular-season dual on April 13, 2013, at the Perrysburg Tennis Center, before getting past the Falcons in the title match of the MAC Championships two weekends later (April 28, 2013). The regular-season match was a five-hour marathon, and the rematch went down to a third set at the top singles flight. Two of BGSU's five series triumphs over Miami came in the 2006-07 campaign. The Falcons' last series win was a 4-3 decision in the league tourney quarterfinals that spring.
Only two players on the 2014-15 BGSU roster, Hutchison and junior Drew Fillis, saw action in last year's MU match. Fillis played at the fifth singles and second doubles flights, while Hutchison was in the lineup at the third doubles and sixth singles flights. After playing a pair of doubles matches in this year's opening tournament (Sept. 12-13 at Miami), Fillis has missed the rest of the season to date due to injury.
Following this weekend's match, the Falcons will close the regular-season schedule with a pair of conference road duals. BGSU will take on Ball State next Friday (April 17) before meeting Eastern Michigan two days later (April 19).
