Knoxville, Tenn. – Brooke Pleger placed third in the hammer throw on day one of the Tennessee Relays Powered By Sea Ray to lead a quartet of Falcons in competition Thursday.
Pleger threw the hammer 209-feet-8 and was beaten out by only Gwen Berry, a professional for the New York Athletic Club, and Southern Illinois' DeAnna Price, who ranks second in the country in the event. Kori Reiser finished 13th with a throw of 173-7 and Kayla Velasquez was one spot behind at 170-4. In total, there were 34 competitors in the event.
Berry won the hammer at 222-6 and Price threw 220-8. Pleger remains, for the time being, the top ranked collegian in the event after throwing 222-4 a week ago in the Toledo Dual. On Thursday night, she fouled on her first two attempts before posting her best throw of the night to qualify for finals. She added a throw of 209-0 in her first of three throws in the finals but was unable to improve on her distance of 209-8 to end third.
The only other Falcon to compete on the first day of competition in Tennessee was Krystin Reiser. She took part in the first four events of the heptathlon and scored 2,479 points. Her top scoring event came in the 100 hurdles as she ran 16.18 seconds for 692 points. She will take part in the final three events of the heptathlon Friday.
Bowling Green will be back in action at the Tennessee Relays on both Friday and Saturday with events scheduled to begin at 10 am each day.
