May 28, 2015 | Women's Track and Field
Jacksonville, Fla. – Makenzie Wheat recorded a top 20 finish at the NCAA East Region Preliminary Round and Brittany Sinclair concluded her collegiate career at her first NCAA regional meet Thursday at the University of North Florida.
In each event, the top 12 finishers at the regional preliminary round advances to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field National Championships at the University of Oregon. Wheat placed 19th in the shot put, climbing 29 places from a year ago when she finished 48th as a freshman. Sinclair placed fifth in her heat after entering as the sixth seed. Overall, she finished exactly where she was seeded in 35th place.
A year ago, Wheat advanced to the regional round with the last of 48 spots as a true freshman but failed to register a legal throw at the meet. On Thursday, her first throw went 50-feet-2 (15.29 meters) and she tied Alabama's Candicea Bernard for 18th place. Wheat lost the tiebreak (comparing second-best throws) for 19th place. She finished fifth among freshmen and sophomores at the meet and six of the 18 competitors in front of her are seniors.
Sinclair ran in the last of six heats of the 400 hurdles with the top three in each heat, plus the next six best times, advancing to Friday's quarterfinals. She finished with a time of 59.97 seconds and ended fifth in her heat. In total, she finished 35th overall and was second of the four Mid-American Conference runners at the meet.
"It was a great experience for Makenzie, especially after last year," BGSU Track & Field Coach Lou Snelling said. "It puts her in a realistic spot as she eyes advancing to the NCAA Championships in the future. For Brittany, competing at this caliber of a meet is the culmination of her career. She holds six school records and will go down as one of the better sprinters in program history. I appreciate everything she has done for our program."
In Snelling's four-year tenure at Bowling Green, the Falcons have competed in an event at the NCAA regional meet 11 times, equaling or bettering their seed 10 times.
Bowling Green will continue to compete at the NCAA regionals Friday. Redshirt sophomore Kori Reiser will take part in the discus at noon. She is seeded No. 45 after posting a season-best throw of 160-9 at the MAC Championships two weeks ago. On Saturday, Brooke Pleger will compete in the hammer throw at 1:30 pm as the top-ranked thrower in the country.
