Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University volleyball coach Danijela Tomic has announced the addition of two student-athletes for the 2015 season. Mahlia Blair and Katarina Kovach have committed to compete for the Falcons.
Â
Blair, who hails from Dublin, Ohio, graduated from Dublin Coffman High School in May. The daughter of Joey Blair and Jennifer Ross, she stands 5-feet-10. A four-year letter winner at Dublin Coffman, Blair was a two-time second-team all-conference player and earned the team's Best Defensive Player award twice and Captain's award as a senior. Her team won Ohio Capital Conference and district championships in each of her four years and Blair was a two-year team captain. Blair plays club volleyball for Mintonette Sports.
Â
Kovach, at 5-feet-8, hails from North Ridgeville, Ohio and is a 2012 graduate of North Ridgeville High School. She spent two years playing volleyball at Lorain County Community College and will have two years of eligibility remaining at BGSU. The daughter of Gregory and Jennifer Kovach, she earned three varsity letters in high school and was also a basketball player, where she was a team captain. At Lorain County Community College, Kovach was a two-year captain and helped her team to a 52-29 record in two seasons. As a sophomore, she ranked among the top 25 in the country in block assists and total blocks, while recording more than 1,400 assists. She plays club volleyball for Advance Volleyball Club.
Â
"We are excited to announce the additions of Mahlia and Katarina to our program," Tomic said. "Both are outstanding young women with great character and values. Mahlia has a lot of athletic potential and plays much higher on the net than what her height might suggest and she will add depth to our middle blocker position. Katarina brings the experience to our young team of having competed for two years at the junior college level and she adds valuable depth to our setter position. Both will have to adjust to the speed of the collegiate game and to our offense but I have no doubt they will be successful in that transition."
Â
Blair and Kovach are part of a six-member incoming class along with Madeline Brandewie, Ryann Cox, Isabel Kovacic and Kallie Seimet. BGSU returns six letter winners from a year ago, including five starters. With no seniors on the roster, a talented junior class consisting of first team All-MAC performer Jelena Sunjic and returning starters Delaney Arkeilpane, Madeline Garda and Alyssa Maloney will provide leadership and talent.
Â
Tomic begins her fourth season leading BGSU Volleyball in 2015. During her tenure, the Falcons won the 2012 MAC Championship, as well as earning the program's first NCAA Tournament win and first victory over a top 25 ranked opponent.
