Lexington, Kentucky – For the 15th consecutive year, the Bowling Green State University volleyball team has been recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for academic excellence. A record 754 college and high school teams were recognized by the AVCA in 2014-15. This number breaks the previous year's total of 687 and sets a new all-time high for this award. The AVCA recognizes volleyball programs across the country that maintains a team GPA of 3.30 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
"We are very proud of our team for continuing academic excellence and earning the AVCA Academic Award for the 15th year in a row. One of our program values is excellence and our team has again shown how committed they are to achieving it in the classroom," head coach Danijela Tomic stated. "I would like to thank our student-athletes for making us coaches and BGSU proud, but a big thank you also goes to everyone who is directly and indirectly involved in helping and supporting them in their pursuit of earning a degree from BGSU."
The BGSU volleyball team earned a 3.547 team GPA for the year, which included a 3.568 during the 2014 fall semester. A total of 12 student-athletes earned a 3.0 grade point average or higher over the fall semester, while 11 student-athletes posted a 3.0 grade point average or higher in the spring semester. Six Falcons recorded a perfect 4.0 grade point average in the fall semester, while four student-athletes tallied a perfect 4.0 grade point average in the spring semester.
Bowling Green is in rare company in terms of the longest active streaks. Only Indiana State University has been honored annually for a longer period, having received the award for 17 consecutive seasons. The AVCA instituted the award for the 1992-93 season.
"A hearty congratulations to all the volleyball coaches whose teams won the AVCA Team Academic Award," said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. "Teams do not succeed in the classroom by accident any more so than they do on the court. The same coach who taught them volleyball skills cared enough about their academic achievement to gather their grades, calculate their GPA, and submit a nomination on their behalf. In doing so, these coaches sent a clear message that classroom success is just as important as volleyball success. All involved should celebrate this award!"
The 2014-15 recognition marks the 16th time in the 23-year history of the award that the Falcons have been honored for academic excellence by the AVCA. Over 1,000 different schools have earned the award in the program's history, with exactly 6,878 awards being given out in total.
