Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team held an Alumnae Match on Saturday, Aug. 22, in which a number of former Falcon volleyball student-athletes dusted off their shoes and pads to retake the court against the 2015 Falcons squad in a battle of the Orange and Brown.
The 2015 Falcons defeated the Alumnae Team in four sets at 25-16, 25-11, 20-25 and 25-14 in front of a large crowd in the Stroh Center. After the match, the BGSU volleyball program held an informal meet and greet session in the Anderson Club with the alumnae, parents, families and season ticket holders.
"This was great. What a great event. I was so happy to see a lot of players from our 2012 championship team. Our players enjoyed this competition. We kind of got tired of playing against each other the last two weeks and I thought it was just great to see our fans, the fans of our alumnae, the parents of our alumnae and a lot of fans that came to see the alumnae," commented head coach Danijela Tomic.
The Alumnae Team was no pushover, as all eight players in Danielle Tonyan, Kelsey Bates, Ashley Dunn, Leah Shaw, Cassie Zerkle, Lindsey Butterfield, Kaitlyn Skinner and Laura Avila, as well as Erica Fullenkamp, who came in to coach late in the match, were part of the 2012 Mid-American Conference Championship Team.
"I thought they played actually well knowing that they are not practicing every day and probably that some of them have not touched a ball in a long time," continued Tomic. "I thought they gave us some nice competition today."
The Alumnae Match took place this year in place of the annual Orange and White Scrimmage.
"It was scary. I was really worried for our bodies," commented Dunn, a member of the Alumnae Team. "It felt amazing. This gym feels the same. The energy feels the same. I couldn't have been happier to play with my best friends. Our chemistry hasn't skipped a beat. It has been awesome."
The Falcons will now set their sights on the 2015 regular season slate, as BGSU will open up play on Friday, Aug. 28, at the Blue Raider Bash hosted by Middle Tennessee State University. The Falcons are slated to take on Indiana at 1 p.m. on Friday afternoon before facing off with the Blue Raiders in the night cap at 6:30 p.m.
