Bowling Green, Ohio – The Falcons will return to the links at a familiar event in the Cardinal Classic hosted by Ball State at The Players Club in Yorktown, Ind. on Sept. 21-22. The 2015 Cardinal Classic will mark the second straight year that the Falcons have competed in the event, as BGSU earned a third-place team finish in the fall of 2014.
"We are excited to get back out and compete," stated head coach Stephanie Young. "The Cardinal Classic always provides a challenging golf course and strong competition."
For the first time in the tournament's 14-year existence, the 2015 Cardinal Classic will feature 54 holes of play at the par 72, 6,204 yards golf course at The Players Club. The tournament will consist of 36 holes, or two rounds of play, on Monday, Sept. 21, beginning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. The final 18 holes of play will start with a 9 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday, Sept. 22.
BGSU will be on of 17 teams in the tournament field this season which also includes Central Michigan, Cleveland State, Dayton, Eastern Kentucky, Eastern Michigan, Indiana State, IPFW, IUPUI, Northern Illinois, Northern Kentucky, Oakland, Ohio, Western Illinois, Western Michigan, Xavier and host Ball State.
The Falcons, who are coming off a 12th-place finish at the Diane Thomason Invitational one week ago, will send out the same golfers as the previous two fall events thus far this season, just in a different order in the lineup with Fran Rodriguez, Lily Bartell, Mikayla Baer, Hannah Lewis and Erin Fahey.
Moving up to the number one spot in the lineup, Rodriguez leads the Falcons this year with a scoring average of 77.33 over six rounds of play. Carding a season-low round 73 twice at the Redbird Invitational, the junior finished in fifth-place overall with a 54-hole score of 224, +8, at the season opening event. She followed that up with a three-round combined score of 240, +24, at the highly competitive Diane Thomason Invitational just over one week ago.
Bartell will head into play this week having posted rounds of 77, 81 and 79 for a 54-hole score of 237, +21, last time out at the Diane Thomason Invite. The senior has carded an average of 78.00 over her six rounds of play thus far this season and shot a season-low round 72 over the second round of play at the Redbird Invitational.
Sliding into the number three position this week in the Falcons' lineup is Baer, as the junior holds the lowest round by a Falcon thus far this fall with a 71 over the final round of play at the Redbird Invite on Sept. 7. Baer has recorded 54-hole scores of 228, +12, and 240, +24, over BGSU's two events this fall, and has turned in a 78.00 stroke average over six rounds of play.
Lewis, one of the most experienced golfers in the BGSU lineup, turned in rounds of 79, 82 and 80 at the Diane Thomason Invite in Iowa to finish with a three-round combined score of 241, +25, after matching her career-low 54-hole score of 230, +14, with rounds of 75, 75 and 80 at the Redbird Invitational.
Fahey, like the rest of the BGSU lineup, will be playing in her third straight event for the Falcons this fall when she tees the ball up at the Cardinal Classic. The freshman has carded a low round 72 thus far this season and has turned in 54-hole scores of 234, +18, and 241, +25, over her first two tournaments competing as a Falcon.
Eastern Michigan won the tournament last year, defeating Western Michigan in a full-team playoff. The Eagles and the Broncos have each won the tournament four times, while Ball State has won it on three separate occasions. Butler and Southern Illinois also own one team title apiece.
