Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University Track and Field team won nine events and rolled to the Tom Wright Open Championship for the second straight year. The Falcons scored 88 points to defeat Dayton (30 points) and Toledo (29 points).
"There were a lot of positives," BGSU head coach Lou Snelling said. "It was nice to get a few more people involved this week and we'll continue to see that as the season moves on."
The Falcon throwers paced the team Friday night, starting with Kayla Velasquez in the weight throw. She reached a Mid-American Conference automatic qualifying mark, the team's 11th of the year, with a throw of 57-feet-7 to win the event. Teammates Kori Reiser (55-3.75) and Aliyah Gustafson (54-4.5) rounded out the top three finishers in the event.
In the shot put, Gustafson took her turn at the top, posting a personal best by more than two feet at 51-5 – the second-best throw in the MAC this year. Makenzie Wheat finished second at 49-5.5.
BGSU also picked up a first place finish in the triple jump, where Tiera Parker's leap of 39-10 registered as a new personal best. Sydnee Matthew won the long jump at 17-9 and Raven Porter was second in the high jump, finishing with a cleared height of 5-7.
Alicia Arnold ran the table in the 60, posting the fastest time in the prelims and then running 7.61 to win the finals. She also won the 200 in 24.94, while Brianna Johnson added a personal best time of 40.88 seconds to win the 300. Kera Lamotte, who set a new school record in the 300 a week ago, added a bit of distance but still won the 400 in 60.37 seconds. Finally, the 1600 relay team earned first place in 4:06.40.
BGSU recognized eight seniors during the meet for their final indoor home meet of their careers. Andrea Alt, Alicia Arnold, Kera Lamotte, Mackenzie McMillin, Tiera Parker, Becca Rae, Jasmine Redman and Demetra Taylor were all honored.
"They've been here from the beginning or pretty close to it," Snelling said. "They have a lot of ownership and pride in the program and it's exciting to see what they can do over the next couple of months. I think they are going to put this team in a position at the MAC level that it hasn't been in since the 90's."
Bowling Green will return to competition Friday and Saturday at the SPIRE Midwest Open in Geneva, Ohio.
