Kayla Velasquez Shines At Findlay Classic
January 29, 2016 | Women's Track and Field
Findlay, Ohio – Six Bowling Green track and field student-athletes competed in two events at two different meets Friday during the first of days of competition during the weekend. Redshirt junior Kayla Velasquez earned the best result of the day, setting a new personal best in the weight throw.
Velasquez, who had already earned Mid-American Conference automatic qualifying status in the weight throw, tossed the apparatus 58-feet-2.5, more than seven inches further than her previous best. She placed second overall at the Findlay Classic. Freshman Allie Farmer also had a personal best with a toss of 54-8, almost four feet further than her previous collegiate best.
"This is a heavy training week for our throws group," BGSU throws coach Matt Conly said. "So, for both Kayla and Allie to have lifetime bests was a really great result. Kayla is getting better and better every week. For Allie, it was a big step forward in her first career meet away from Bowling Green. Coming away with a new lifetime best by more than a meter was exciting to see."
At the SPIRE Midwest Classic in Geneva, Ohio, the Falcons had four distance runners compete in the 5,000. Senior Becca Rae recorded the top time of the quartet with a personal best time of 17:32.59. She finished second out of 35 total runners. Redshirt junior Mackenzie McMillin followed in third with a time of 17:42.48 and senior Andrea Alt was fourth in 17:45.27. Redshirt sophomore Jody Musser finished the race in 18:48.70.
Bowling Green will be back in action at both meets Saturday.
