Falcons Travel To Eastern Michigan For Dual Meet Friday

The Bowling Green State University swimming and diving program travels to Ypsilanti, Mich. on Friday afternoon for a dual meet against the Eastern Michigan Eagles. The meet is set to begin at 5:00 pm at EMU's Jones Natatorium. The Falcons are coming off a thrilling 151-149 dual meet win against the Miami RedHawks, while the Eagles are fresh off a 158-142 win over Akron.

The BG-EMU Connection
Bowling Green head coach Matt Ense has a connection to the Eastern Michigan program, and to head coach Peter Linn. Ense swam for the Eagles in the late 1990's and early 2000's, winning five MAC Championships during his time in Ypsilanti. Last season, the Falcons edged EMU 155-145 in a tri-meet at Oakland, but were edged out by the Eagles in the EMU Invite.

Coached by 27th-season head coach Peter Linn, EMU enters Friday's meet with a dual-meet record of 5-1 this season. Linn is in his 12th season in charge of the women's swimming program, having taken over in 2004. The Eagles have an impressive resume to date, compiling dual-meet wins over Miami, Akron and Ball State. The Eagles also defeated Oakland and Wayne State. Their only loss has come at the hands of the Ohio State Buckeyes. This past weekend, EMU won 10 events en route to a 158-142 win over Akron – the 250th career victory for Coach Peter Linn.

Griffin Going Strong In Junior Season
Junior Victoria Griffin (Littletown, Pa.) has carried over her success from her freshman and sophomore seasons. In her top event, Griffin has won the 100 freestyle in all five meets she has swam in to date, including this past weekend vs. Miami. Griffin's top time of the season was a 49.89 at the Pittsburgh Invitational, which set a B-cut mark and was just .06 off the school record. She has twice won the 50 free and 200 free, qualifying for Olympic Trials in the 50 free at the Zippy Invitational.

Griffin Qualifies For USA Olympic Trials
With Olympic Trials coming up next summer, the Bowling Green State University swimming and diving program swam in a long course dual meet at University of Akron on the afternoon of Dec. 7 following the three-day Zippy Invitational. The meet was designed to give swimmers an opportunity to qualify for USA Olympic Trials next summer. One Falcon swimmer did just that, as Victoria Griffin punched her ticket to next summer's event in Omaha, Neb. The story of the day was Griffin, a junior from Littlestown, Pa. On the last swim of the first session, she swam a 26.21 in the 50 free to just miss the cut mark of 26.19. But, she had the chance for redemption just 30 minutes later and put up a 26.00 to punch her ticket to next summer's USA Olympic Trials.

Criswell Wins Twice Against Miami
Sophomore Natalie Criswell (Portage, Mich.) picked up two victories to help the Falcons to a narrow dual-meet victory over Miami last Friday. Criswell won the 500 free and 1000 free against the RedHawks. In the 500 free, it was just the second time this season that the Falcons have won the event in a meet, and the first win for Criswell individually in the 500 free. She also won the 1000 free, the second time this season that she has won that event. Criswell has set personal career-bests this season in both the 1000 free (10:24.63) and the 1650 free (17:01.92).

Carrillo Making Her Mark In Breaststroke
Senior Daniela Carrillo (Hermosillo, Mexico) has made her mark on the BGSU record books in the breaststroke events during her career. Carrillo – who won both the 100 and 200 breast in Friday's win over Miami – owns the school record in both events. This season in the 100 breast, Carrillo has won three meets and has five of the Falcons' top eight times. All-time, she owns four of the top 10 best swims in the event. In the 200 breast – Carrillo's best event – she has won it all five times she has competed. She owns five of the top nine swims in the event for the Falcons this season, and five of the top 10 swims all-time in the event. She has hit B-cut marks in both the 100 breast and 200 breast this season.

Falcons Knock Off Miami In Thrilling Fashion
Last Friday's meet against Miami came down to the final event, the 400 freestyle relay. Trailing by three points (143-140), the Falcons edged out the RedHawks in the final event for the narrow victory (151-149). For BGSU, it was their first dual meet win over Miami since at least the turn of the century. Several Falcons contributed victories in the meet, of which the Falcons picked up 11. Both relays (400 Medley, 400 Free) picked up first place finishes, while Carrillo, Criswell and Griffin all won multiple events. The Falcons were also aided by individual wins courtesy of Maya Skorupski (100 back), Jordan Bullock (200 fly), and Franziska Wohlert (200 back). Freshman Claire Stam also set a school-record in the 3-meter dive, scoring 266.63.

Countdown To MAC Championships
Four weeks from today, Mid-American Conference Championships will begin. The meet runs from Wednesday, Feb. 24 through Saturday night, Feb. 27 at Cooper Pool inside the BGSU Rec Center. The Falcons will welcome Akron, Ball State, Buffalo, Eastern Michigan, Miami, Ohio and Toledo to Northwest Ohio for a thrilling four-day event to wrap up the season. With Olympic Trials set for this summer, teams will also remain in Bowling Green to compete in long course time trials on Sunday, Feb. 28.

Falcons Post 3.625 GPA In Fall Semester
Between the 29 student-athletes comprising the Falcons' swimming and diving program, the team compiled an astonishing fall semester grade-point average of 3.625. Ten individuals had perfect 4.0 GPAs – Kayla Effinger, Maria Galic, Nicole Hranchook, Kalinka Mogensen, Anna Paccapaniccia, Emily Ridge, Claire Stam, Christin Swanepoel-Stevens, Emily Verbrugge and Ashley White.

Bowling Green's remaining two meets at Cooper Pool will be available via ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app. The Falcons will welcome Youngstown State and Oakland to The Coop next Friday (Feb. 5), before the hosting the MAC Championships on Feb. 24-27.

The tri-meet against Oakland and Youngstown State will begin at 5:00 pm. The eight seniors that will be recognized will be Jordan Bullock, Tara Capouch, Daniela Carrillo, Kayla Effinger, Nichole Hranchook, Hannah Newman, Rachel Perry and Alex Poitinger.
