UP NEXT IN FALCON SOCCER
The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team, after playing a rare October home match, returns to the road for the next three contests. Head coach Eric Nichols and the Falcons step outside of Mid-American Conference play to face the University of Kentucky on Tuesday night (Oct. 18). The Wildcats are ranked in all four national polls. BG and UK will meet in a 7:00 p.m. start at the Wendell and Vickie Bell Soccer Complex.
FOLLOW THE FALCONS
• In addition to live stats, the BGSU-UK match is scheduled to have a live stream via the SEC Network Plus, ESPN3.com and WatchESPN. And, live twitter updates will be available @BGSUmenssoccer.
• All of the pertinent information can be found on the web at BGSUFalcons.com on the day of the match.
FAST START
• BGSU is off to a 1-0-1 start in Mid-American Conference play. With 40 percent of the conference matches in the books, the Falcons are in second place in the six-team league with four points. BG was picked to finish fifth in the preseason coaches poll.
• The Falcons' conference start is the program's best since 2002. That '02 team began league play with a pair of wins en route to a 4-1-0 league mark.
HONORABLE FALCONS
• Several Falcons received individual honors last week, as a result of the team's road wins vs. Northern Kentucky and No. 22 West Virginia. Junior Alexis Souahy, who scored both goals in the Falcons' 2-1 win over NKU, was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week, and also was selected MAC Player of the Week, last Monday
• Senior Pat Flynn, who had an assist at NKU and scored the lone goal in the win at WVU, was selected to the TopDrawerSoccer National Team of the Week on Tuesday, earning that honor for the second time this season.
• Additionally, freshman Robert Miller III was one of the nominees for Hero of the Week this week on the HEROSports web site.
SUCCESSFUL IN THE CLASSROOM AS WELL
• BGSU recently received the NSCAA Team Academic Award for the 2015-16 academic year, the NSCAA office announced recently. The award is given to soccer programs that have achieved a minimum team grade-point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
• The Falcons had a team GPA of 3.235 in the 2015-16 academic year, with a 3.176 GPA in the fall semester and a 3.295 GPA in the spring semester.
•  Nichols' team was recognized for the sixth time in the last seven seasons, and the men's soccer Falcons made the list for the eighth time overall.
A FEW THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE FALCONS
• The Falcons have an overall record of 8-3-2, and BGSU is 1-0-1 in MAC play. BG has gone 3-1-2 over the last six matches.
• BG opened the year with three multiple-goal wins at Cochrane Stadium, downing IUPUI, Appalachian State and Marshall. The Falcons scored 10 goals and conceded just one in those three matches.
• BG went on the road for the first time and picked up a win, as freshman Chris Brennan's goal with just four seconds remaining in the second overtime gave the Falcons a thrilling 1-0 victory at Cleveland State. But, the Brown and Orange then dropped two of the next three contests.
• The lone win during that three-game stretch was a 2-0 victory over Wright State in this year's battle for the I-75 Cup. Seniors Jacob Roth and Pat Flynn scored BG's goals vs. the Raiders.
• BG downed Ohio State by a 2-0 result before a crowd of over 2,500 fans at Cochrane. The Falcons then dropped a narrow 1-0 decision at #25 Michigan State, but rebounded with road wins in the next two contests.
• The Brown and Orange picked up a 2-1 win at Northern Kentucky, with junior Alexis Souahy scoring both goals. Then, the Falcons got a goal from Flynn early in the second half and a clean sheet from freshman Anthony Mwembia, earning a 1-0 win over No. 22 West Virginia in Morgantown.
• On Saturday night, the Falcons battled Western Michigan to a 1-1 draw at Cochrane.
• BGSU is 5-0-2 at home and 3-3-0 on the road this season. The Falcons have outscored the opponents, 16-3, in the seven home matches, and BG and the foes each have scored five goals in the six road contests.
• The Falcons are 6-0-0 when scoring two or more goals this season. BGSU is 14-0-1 in such matches since the start of the 2015 season, and the Falcons are 44-4-5 when scoring at least two goals in the Eric Nichols Era.
• BGSU is ranked sixth in the Great Lakes Region in the latest NSCAA ratings (as of last Tuesday). The Falcons have been ranked among the region's top-10 team in all seven weeks this season, and the number-six ranking matches a season best.
• Nine different players have scored at least one goal for the Falcons this season to date. Brennan leads the way with five goals, while Flynn has four and fellow senior Joe Sullivan three.
• Flynn has a team-best 12 points, while Brennan has registered 10 points, Sullivan nine and freshman Robert Miller III eight. Roth has seven points, including a team-leading five assists.
• Mwembia has played 12 of the 13 matches in goal this season to date. He has 44 saves, six shutouts and a goals-against average of just 0.55. Redshirt freshman Noah Kummer played the full 90 minutes in the win at NKU, making three saves.
• A total of 21 players have seen action for the Falcons this fall to date, with 16 players making at least one start. Seven players – Flynn, Roth, Souahy, Sullivan, junior Brad Macomber, redshirt sophomore Bismark Agyeman and true soph Tate Robertson – each have started all 13 matches.
• The Falcons have a record of 31-18-4 (.623) since the beginning of the 2014 season. The '14 team went 14-6-1, posting the program's most wins in nearly two decades (since 1997), and advanced to the MAC Tournament's championship match for the first time since 2003. Last year's team finished 9-9-1, marking only the second time since 2000 that BGSU had won as many as nine games in a season.
STRONG SENIOR CLASS
• All four of the Falcons' seniors have made their mark on the program. BGSU has a record of 37-25-10 since Max Auden, Jacob Roth and Joe Sullivan made their respective playing debuts in 2013, and the Falcons are 31-18-4 since Pat Flynn joined that group prior to the 2014 campaign.
• That quartet has combined for 62 goals and 53 assists in their respective Falcon careers.
• Flynn has career totals of 27 goals and 66 points, and is now tied with Dave Kindl (1993-96) on both BGSU career lists. The two are deadlocked for seventh place on the BG career goals list, and they are tied for ninth on the points chart. Flynn is only three goals shy of fifth place in BG history.
• Sullivan enters the UK match with a career total of 48 points, on 16 goals and 16 assists. Roth has 39 points on 11 goals and 17 assists. Roth, the Falcons' active career leader in assists, is just five shy of 10th place on that BG career list.
• Flynn now has nine career game-winning goals, good for fourth place in school history, while Sullivan has eight (NOTE: GWG information since 1987).
• Auden, who missed the first seven matches of the year due to an injury suffered in the spring, has played in the last six games, and scored the winner vs. OSU. He now has 24 career points on eight goals and eight assists. Auden has four career GWG, with the first three coming against MAC teams (two in overtime) in 2014.
LOOKING TO MAINTAIN THAT HOME-FIELD ADVANTAGE
• The Falcons are 5-0-2 at home this season to date. BGSU has outscored the opponents, 16-3, in those six matches at Cochrane Stadium.
• Since the start of the 2014 season, BGSU has a record of 17-4-3 at Cochrane. The Falcons went 6-2-0 last year and 6-2-1 in 2014. All four home losses in that time have come by identical 1-0 scores. The two '14 setbacks both came against nationally-ranked opponents. Last year's home losses came on a goal in overtime and a goal with under two minutes left in regulation.
• The Falcons have outscored the opponents, 60-16, at Cochrane, dating to the final home game of the 2013 season. BG has scored at least two goals in 17 of the 25 matches in that time, with three or more goals in 10 of those games.
• Senior Pat Flynn has singlehandedly outscored the opponents at Cochrane Stadium in his Falcon career. Flynn has scored 19 goals in home games since transferring to BGSU prior to the 2014 season, while Falcon foes, as mentioned, have 16 goals during that time.
SCOUTING UK
Kentucky, like BGSU, is 8-3-2 on the season, and the Wildcats are 3-2-0 in Conference USA action, after a 2-0 home win over Old Dominion on Saturday. UK is ranked in all four national polls, including 19th by TopDrawerSoccer and 20th in the latest NSCAA poll. The Wildcats saw a five-match unbeaten streak snapped with last weekend's 2-1 loss at UAB, before bouncing back with the win over ODU. UK remains undefeated at home, with a 6-0-2 record at The Bell. Napo Matsoso leads the team in scoring, with four goals and 12 points, while three of his teammates have six points apiece. One of those three, Charlie Reymann, has a UK-high six assists on the year. Stuart Ford has played every match in net, and has 32 saves, seven shutouts and a GAA of 0.58. A year ago, head coach Johan Cedergren's team went 12-5-2 overall and 7-0-1 in C-USA, advancing to the NCAA Championships.
THE SERIES
The Falcons trail Kentucky, 10-8-1, in the all-time series between the teams, and the Wildcats have won the last two meetings. The teams met in every season from 1995-2004, while UK was a MAC member for men's soccer, and BG and UK also met in the MAC Tournament eight times during a nine-year stretch. The teams have met just once since '04, with the Wildcats picking up a 4-1 win in Lexington in 2009, in the first road match of the Eric Nichols Era. The Falcons are 5-4-0 at home, 1-5-1 on the road and 2-1-0 at neutral sites vs. UK through the years.
A FEW FINAL FALCON FACTS
• The Falcons are 7-0-2 in night games in 2016. All of BGSU's remaining regular-season contests are scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. ET or later.
• BGSU is 3-0-0 this fall and 16-0-0 all time when Pat Flynn scores a goal.
• Junior Alexis Souahy's two-goal game at Northern Kentucky was the first of his career and the second by a Falcon this season. Flynn had a brace in the win over Appalachian State on Aug. 28.
