Sophomores Carly Santoro and Sydney Lambert led the Falcons in scoring, with 17 and 11 points, respectively. Lambert scored eight of her 11 points in the first quarter, while Santoro scored 14 of her 17 after halftime.
BGSU trailed by 10 points at the half, and the Falcons fell behind by as many as 16 late in the third quarter. But, the Falcons then scored 11-straight points as part of a 16-2 run in a span of just over four minutes.
Jasmine Joyner paced the Mocs with 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. In addition to rebounding, Joyner led all players with four assists, three steals and nine blocked shots.
Queen Alford also hit double figures in scoring for UTC, with 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting. She opened the game's scoring with a jumper, but senior Ashley Tunstall threw the ball inside to Abby Siefker for a layup that tied the score with just under a minute gone.
But, the Mocs proceeded to score the game's next 11 points. Alford hit a three-point field goal with the shot clock winding down to give her team a 7-2 lead, and after a teammate's shot hit nothing but air, Lakelyn Bouldin came up with the rebound and hit a quick reverse layup. An Alford layup and a pair of Joyner free throws gave the Mocs that 11-point advantage. UTC scored on each of the team's first five possessions.
After the Joyner charity tosses midway through the period, the Falcons held the Mocs without a point for nearly five minutes. In fact, Chattanooga would go a total of 6:40 without hitting a field goal.
Meanwhile, Lambert's right-side jumper began a personal 8-0 run for the sophomore. The Cincinnati native knocked down a three-pointer from the right wing with the shot clock nearing zero, then saw a straightaway triple try bounce around the rim and in. With 1:32 left in the opening quarter, the Falcons were back within three points.
But, after Joyner split a pair of free throws, Moses Johnson threw up a contested three-pointer that hit the backboard and caromed through the hoop as the first-quarter horn sounded. Chattanooga's lead was 17-10 after 10 minutes of play.
That lead increased to 10 points on the first possession of the second quarter, as Shelbie Davenport also banked home a three-point try. Junior Haley Puk answered with a driving layup, and sophomore Maddie Cole was fouled inside and knocked down a pair of free-throw attempts, but a UTC jumper restored the Mocs' 10-point lead.
Lambert deflected a UTC pass, giving the ball back to BG, and the sophomore found freshman Andrea Cecil for a right-side three-pointer. The Falcons made nine triples for the second-straight game. But, back came the Mocs with a three-pointer of their own to make it a 27-17 game.
Neither team scored for over three minutes, until freshman Caterrion Thompson fed Santoro for a triple with 54 seconds left in the half. But, Joyner knocked down a jumper, and Johnson was fouled on a three-point attempt with just 4.7 seconds left in the period. She made only one of her three free-throw tries, but it was enough to give UTC a 30-20 lead at the break.
Tunstall opened the third-quarter scoring with a triple just 32 seconds in, but the Mocs responded by hitting four-straight shots in the paint over the next few minutes. Joyner's layup at the 6:39 mark gave her team a 38-23 lead.
Tunstall capped a nifty drive with a hesitation layup with 5:16 left in the period, and the Falcons proceeded to get several consecutive stops on defense. BG couldn't cut into the lead, however, and after a Joyner steal, Bouldin hit a trey for a 41-25 lead -- the largest of the game -- with 2:44 left in the third.
Santoro and the Falcons came right back, though. The sophomore drained a long-range try on the game's next possession, then banked home another trey moments later to cut the UTC lead to 10. Siefker split a pair of free throws with 48.9 seconds left in the period, and Santoro came up with a steal, then split two defenders for a layup with 18 seconds left in the quarter. BG got another stop, and the Falcons trailed by just seven, 41-34, after 30 minutes.
Santoro scored eight points in the Falcons' 9-0 run that ended the third period.
That run became an 11-0 run when junior Rachel Myers was fouled on a baseline drive just eight seconds into the fourth period. Myers hit both of the ensuing free throws.
After Alford ended UTC's drought with a bucket, Santoro responded with a layup, then took a Myers pass and knocked down a shot from the top of the arc. Suddenly, it was a 43-41 game with 8:34 to go.
But, despite getting numerous stops on defense over the remainder of the game, the Brown and Orange could never quite get over the hump. Joyner's free throw with 7:19 on the clock made it a three-point contest, and after a missed shot by the Falcons, Bouldin's transition three put her team ahead, 47-41, with 5:36 remaining.
After a BG timeout, Tunstall split two defenders on a slashing drive to the hoop and hit a layup. But, just over a minute later, the Mocs used all of the shot clock before a layup by Aryanna Gilbert made it a six-point contest once again.
Santoro split two shots from the stripe, and Siefker converted a nifty driving layup with 2:48 remaining. UTC's lead was just 49-46, and Santoro blocked a shot on the next possession, but BG could not capitalize. BG got three-straight stops, but could not cut into the lead, and finally, with just under a minute to go, a blocked shot led to a run-out layup by Chelsey Shumpert, giving the Mocs a 51-46 lead.
The Falcons came up empty on the next possession, then fouled four times in a span of just under two seconds. The fourth foul in that span sent Bouldin to the line, and she missed her first shot, but hit the second with 41.1 seconds remaining.
BG missed a triple try on the next trip down the floor, and the Falcons fouled Bouldin again. This time, she missed both shots, and Tunstall rebounded the second miss. Lambert hit a three-pointer and BG quickly called a timeout with 10.9 seconds left, trailing by three.
Out of the timeout, the Mocs were able to inbound the ball to Shumpert, who was quickly fouled. She made both shots with 10.3 seconds left, giving her team a five-point lead and providing the final margin of victory.
In addition to her 11 points, Lambert had a BG-best eight rebounds. The Falcons outrebounded UTC, 39-30, in the contest. Tunstall scored seven points and Siefker five, and they each had seven boards.
Santoro went 4-for-7 from three-point range, while Lambert hit three long-distance tries for the Brown and Orange.
The Falcons will conclude a stretch of three games in three days with a Monday (Nov. 21) contest vs. Lafayette, beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the KFC Yum! Center.
