Sosby, Falcons down UND; Combs saddled with loss to ECU despite solid performance in the circle
The Bowling Green State University softball team was involved in a pair of pitcher's duels on Friday (March 11), with the Falcons winding up with a split on the day. BGSU downed the University of North Dakota, 1-0, behind the three-hit shutout pitching of freshman Kiley Sosby, before the Brown and Orange fell to East Carolina University, 2-0.
Both games were part of the USF Under Armour Invitational, and were held at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.

In the Falcons' Friday opener, Sosby picked up her first collegiate shutout and her third consecutive win. The second game saw junior Briana Combs suffer the tough loss despite allowing just one earned run and four hits in her complete-game effort.
Sosby fired the first complete-game shutout of her young career, and it was BG's first shutout of 2016. Â The win put the Falcons over the .500 mark for the first time this season.
BGSU is now 3-0 all-time vs. UND, and the Falcons have thrown shutouts in all three games. BG posted a doubleheader sweep over North Dakota in 2014 at Meserve Field.
Redshirt sophomore Chelsea Raker had two of the Falcons' six hits in Friday's win over the Fighting Hawks.
Neither Sosby nor UND starter Kaylin VanDomelen allowed a hit through the first three innings of Friday's BG opener. The Fighting Hawks got a baserunner in the first, as Nicole Babrowski led off the bottom of the first with a walk. But, a fielder's choice, a fly ball to center and an unsuccessful stolen-base attempt ended that half-inning.
Sosby retired the side in order in both the second and third frames, but VanDomelen set down the first nine BGSU batters of the game.
In the fourth, however, the Falcons broke on top. Senior Marina Cobbs led off the inning with a single. She was forced at second on a grounder by junior Aspen Searle, but Searle stole second base, then took third on a single by Raker. Senior Marisa Shook then drove in the only run of the game, when she hit a grounder to short. The Fighting Hawks forced Raker at second, but Searle came home with what proved to be the only run Sosby would need.
UND got a runner to second with one out in the home half of the fourth, as VanDomelen singled, then moved up a base when Shelby Hard walked. But, Sosby got both Emily Bell and Taylor Hansen to hit popups, with third baseman Raker catching the first and shortstop Searle grabbing the second to end the threat.
Sophomore Morgan Evangelista singled to lead off the fifth, and Sosby followed with a single that moved pinch-runner Alex Sorgi to second. A grounder to the circle moved the runners to second and third, but VanDomelen struck out the next batter, then got a grounder back toward the circle for the third out.
In the UND fifth, the Fighting Hawks advanced a runner to second on a leadoff walk and a sacrifice bunt. But, that runner, Mary Martin, was caught stealing for the second out of the inning, and Natalie Gerber followed with an inning-ending grounder to third.
The Falcon sixth saw Raker single up the middle – her 13th hit in her last 17 at-bats to that point – and, with two outs junior Haley Schrock singled to put runners at the corners. But, VanDomelen struck out the next batter to end the inning.
But, Sosby kept the Fighting Hawks off of the scoreboard. Â She allowed a one-out single to Babrowski, who tagged and advanced to second on a fly ball that was caught in foul ground down the left-field line. Sosby, though, got a popup to short.
In the seventh, Hansen doubled with one down, and Martin's grounder moved pinch-runner Deja Miller to third base. For the first time all game, UND had a runner just 60 feet away from scoring. But, after Autumn Cervantez fouled off three pitches, Sosby got her to hit a popup to Searle at shortstop to end the game.
Sosby threw 92 pitches, including 60 strikes, in her complete-game win. Over her last three starts, all wins, she has allowed only 10 hits in 21 innings of work.
VanDomelen took the loss, despite allowing just one run and six hits. She struck out six Falcons and did not walk a batter, throwing 60 of her 95 total pitches for strikes.
In the Falcons' second game of the day, East Carolina (15-10) starter Lydia Ritchie was masterful, allowing only one hit. She struck out 12 batters, and the only BG hit was an infield single by senior Molly Holliday in the third inning. Ritchie's complete-game shutout was her fifth of the young season, tying her for second in the nation in that category.
Combs pitched well, allowing just five hits, but the Pirates got an early run in the bottom of the first. Meredith Mitchell singled, then took second on a grounder and scored on a throwing error after a line drive back to the circle by Casey Alcorn. Combs escaped further damage by getting each of the next two batters to hit infield grounders, but the Pirates had the lead for good.
The BG third saw sophomore Katee Hinkle draw a leadoff walk on four pitches, before Holliday reached on a bunt. With runners at first and second, though, Ritchie got a strikeout, a popup back to her, and a grounder to short.
Both teams were retired in order in their next at-bat, but the Pirates loaded the bases with two down in the second. Alex Mycek walked, Sloan Bradford singled and when Megan Quick hit a grounder to the left side, everyone moved up a base on an error. But, Combs got Mitchell to ground out to Raker at third on the very next pitch.
In the fifth, Combs got two outs, striking out Ciara Ervin after a lengthy, eight-pitch at-bat, then whiffing Alcorn as well. But, Karlie Smith singled, and Cheek doubled to right-center to double her team's lead.
ECU advanced a runner as far as third after a walk and a BG error in the sixth, but Combs and the Falcons got out of the inning with a liner to shortstop and a grounder toward the mound. But, Ritchie retired the last 15 batters she faced, retiring the Brown and Orange in order to wrap up the complete-game shutout win.
Ritchie threw a total of 105 pitches in the win, throwing 72 of those pitches for strikes. She walked two batters in the win, her eighth of the season.
The Falcons are back in action on Saturday morning (March 12), playing a pair of games against Fairfield and Hartford.
