"Today was a tough day, to say the least," said BGSU coach Sarah Willis. "But, we will learn from this, and we will get better. The great thing is that we get a chance to take the field again tomorrow and take a positive step forward."
Sophomore Kayla Gregory had three hits on the day, including two hits (and a walk) in the WIU game. Gregory entered Friday's action with one career hit.
Junior Haley Schrock wasted no time getting the Falcons (11-13 after Friday's action) on the scoreboard vs. IPFW. She led off the game with a home run to left field off of 'Dons starter Demitra Burns. With one out, redshirt sophomore Chelsea Raker continued her torrid hitting, lining a double to left. Raker moved to third on a grounder, but after issuing a walk to sophomore Morgan Evangelista, Burns got a popup to escape further damage.
IPFW evened the score with an unearned run in the bottom of the inning. Lauren Watson reached on an infield error to begin the home half of the first, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. She took third on a grounder, and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Falcon starter Briana Combs struck out Kelly Pevely to retire the side.
Both teams were set down in order in the second, and Burns worked around a Schrock leadoff walk to get out of the third inning. Burns led off the bottom of the inning with a single, but was erased on a fielder's choice. A two-out double by Emily Olszewski sent Watson to third, but Combs got Jessica Murray to hit a grounder back toward the circle for out number three.
Gregory, making her first career start, singled with one down in the fourth, and senior Marina Cobbs drew a two-out walk, but Burns worked out of that jam.
The 'Dons threatened in the bottom of the inning, as Pevely led off with a walk, and Amber Davis reached on an infield single. Combs got Sierra Miranda to hit a double-play ball to Schrock at second base, as Schrock nabbed Davis and fired to first for the second out. Pevely advanced to third, but was stranded there when Combs struck out Sydney Windlan.
A two-out Raker walk was followed by senior Marisa Shook's single in the Falcon half of the fifth, but a popup to short anded the inning. IPFW's Jenna Balthazor reached third base with two down in the bottom of the frame, on a single, a grounder and a wild pitch. But, Combs got Olszewski to fly out to Shook in left.
Freshman Kiley Sosby lined a single to left-center with one away in the sixth. Classmate Alex Sorgi was inserted as a pinch-runner, and promptly stole second. But, Burns got a strikeout for the second out, and induced the next hitter to loft a fly ball to left for the third out.
Combs retired the 'Dons in order in the home half of the sixth, on a called strike three and a pair of grounders to the left side. But, Burns returned the favor in the top of the seventh, striking out the first two Falcons, then getting a fly-ball out.Â
And, the 'Dons won it in the bottom of the inning. Miranda led off with a triple to left-center, and she scored on a grounder by Taylor Gordy Prescott.
Both teams had five hits, with 10 different players coming up with one hit apiece. Burns earned the victory with seven innings of one-run, five-hit ball. She walked four batters and struck out three.
Combs took the loss despite allowing just one earned run and five hits in her complete-game effort. She walked just one batter and whiffed six.
BGSU left eight runners on base, to four for IPFW.
In the nightcap, Western Illinois got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. After Sosby retired the first two hitters, Kelsey Marlow hit a solo homer to left to open the game's scoring. Then, Aly Compton singled, continued all the way to third on an error, and scored on an infield hit by Payton Abbott.
Compton's run, of course, was unearned. It was the first of six unearned runs -- three for each team -- in the game.
The Falcons responded to WIU's two-run first inning with a four-run second frame. Sosby was hit by a pitch with one out, and Gregory singled to move Sosby to second. Sosby was retired on a fielder's choise for the first out of the inning, but freshman Hannah Giammarino walked to load the bases. Then, on an infield hit by senior Molly Holliday, four runs scored on an error by the Leathernecks' catcher. WIU starter Brooke Stulga got a grounder for the third out of the inning, but the Brown and Orange had a 4-2 lead.
Sosby retired the side in order in the bottom of the second, striking out the first two hitters, and the Falcons went back to work in the third. Raker singled with one down, and took second on an error. From there, she scored when Shook ripped a double to center. Shook would advance to third on a grounder, and she scored easily when Gregory singled up the middle.
For Gregory, the WIU contest marked the first two-hit game of her career.
Both teams got the leadoff runner aboard the next time up. The bottom of the third saw WIU's Karissa Kouchis walk, then steal second one out later. In the BG fourth, Holliday reached on an error, then promptly stole second. But, both starting pitchers procedded to retire the next three hitters.
Sosby set down the Leathernecks in order in the home half of the fourth, getting three weak popups. And, BG added to the lead in the fifth.
Shook was hit by a pitch, and Sosby singled up the middle. Abbott entered the circle and got a fly ball to center for the first out, with Shook advancing to third. Sosby then stole second, and a walk to junior Trista Mokienko -- her second in as many plate appearances -- loaded the bases. Abbott struck out the next hitter, but Holliday was safe on an infield hit, with Shook scoring. Then, a wild pitch allowed Sosby to cross the plate for an 8-2 advantage.
In the bottom of the fifth, though, Western parlayed five hits into four runs. Rachel Beatty doubled with one out, but Sosby got Kouchis to hit a grounder to the circle for the second out. But, Tierney Bottino doubled, and Marlow followed with a double of her own. When, Compton homered to left, BG's lead was suddenly down to two runs. Freshman Brooke Parker entered the game, and after allowing a single, she got Nina Maggio to foul out to catcher Mokienko.
WIU's Sidney Bottino and Hailey Duwa each reached on infield errors in the sixth, and after a fly ball to right, a grounder to the right side advanced the runners to second and third. But, that's where they remained, as Parker fielded Tierney Bottino's grounder and threw her out.
Gregory walked with one down in the seventh, and she advanced to second on a grounder, but was stranded there as a popup ended the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, three walks loaded the bases with one out. Then, Taylor Messer was hit by a pitch to score Marlow and make it a one-run game. A grounder by Duwa was fielded by shortstop Katee Hinkle, and the Falcon sophomore fired home to force Abbott at the plate for the second out. But, Beatty's fly ball was dropped, allowing Maggio and Messer to cross the plate for the walk-off win.
Gregory, as mentioned, had two hits and a walk in the game. Holliday, like Gregory, was 2-for-3 at the plate vs. the Leathernecks. She drove in two runs while Shook scored a pair of runs.
For WIU, the three, four and five hitters in the batting order each had two hits. Marlow and Abbott were 2-for-3, with Marlow scoring three runs and driving in two. Compton had a 2-for-4 day, scoring twice and picking up two RBI.
Abbott picked up the win in relief, with three innings of one-hit shutout ball. Stulga surrendered eight runs (five earned) and seven hits in her four innings of work.
Parker took the loss in relief for the Falcons. She allowed just one hit in two innings, but issued three walks.
The Falcons' Saturday (March 19) schedule at the Hoosier Classic includes games against Michigan State and UIC. BGSU meets the Spartans at 10:00 a.m. and the Flames at 4:45 p.m.
