Raleigh, N.C. – The Bowling Green State University track and field team began the outdoor season with three Mid-American Conference automatic qualifying marks during day one of the Raleigh Relays Friday. The Falcons will continue competition Saturday during the program's season-opening weekend.
The Falcons set two of their MAC automatic marks in the shot put. Junior Makenzie Wheat posted the sixth-best performance in program history in the event, placing second overall in the 37-person field with a distance of 50-feet-3.5. Four of her six tosses exceeded the MAC auto mark of 47-7. Redshirt sophomore Aliyah Gustafson, in the first outdoor meet of her collegiate career, placed seventh overall at 47-7.75.
Junior Raven Porter continued her impressive 2016 year in the high jump, reaching the MAC auto mark with a jump of 5-7. She placed third in the same event at the MAC Indoor Championships, the team's best individual finish at the meet.
Porter also set a personal best in the long jump, finishing in second place at 18-10. That distance ties her for 10th place in BGSU history and is better than her previous career long of 18-7.25. Senior Tiera Parker jumped 18-0.5, a seven-inch personal best.
Senior Andrea Alt opened the year with a time of 10:59.82 in the steeplechase, just two seconds shy of the MAC automatic qualifying mark. She has earned a spot on the podium at the MAC Championships in each of her first three years in the steeplechase, placing as high as sixth.
Other top 20 finishes included redshirt juniors Kori Reiser in the discus (14th place at 140-2) and Taylor Rambo in the 400 (19th place at 56.63 seconds).
"We had a nice start to the outdoor season today," BGSU head coach Lou Snelling said. "Conditions were ideal for the sprints, jumps and throws. Raven Porter and Makenzie Wheat definitely provided highlights. We will look to build on this momentum tomorrow."
A year ago, the Falcons had just one MAC automatic qualifying mark during the opening weekend of competition at the same meet. Bowling Green will look to add to this year's total beginning at 10 am Saturday.
