YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team lost to the Eastern Michigan University Eagles, 8-4, Sunday (March 27) afternoon. The win for Eastern Michigan completed the three-game sweep of the Falcons. The weekend marked the opening of Mid-American Conference play around the league.
Bowling Green falls to 8-16 with the loss, and 0-3 within the conference. The win pushes Eastern Michigan's record to 9-13 (3-0 MAC).
"This was not the way we wanted to start off conference play," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "We have to find a way to score more runs. If we can do that, it will help us out with some of our other struggles right now. When you are not scoring runs, it makes it very difficult to win games."
Bowling Green fell behind early by a score of 2-0, as Eastern Michigan plated a run apiece in the opening two frames. The Eagles scored in the first when a ball got to the backstop with a runner on third, but after Mike Mioduszewski hit a solo home run in the second, the Falcons bounced right back with a one-run fourth.
Riley Minorik kick-started the frame by stinging a ball to the shortstop. Although Marquise Gill picked the ball, a throwing error allowed Minorik to reach second with no outs. One batter later, Greg Basalyga shot a single into left to put runners on the corners with one out. Kory Brown then sacrifice bunted Minorik home, pulling the Falcons within a single run at 2-1.
The Falcons had chances to tie the game in the fifth and sixth, but BGSU could not cash in. Hunter Clanin doubled down the left-field line with two outs in the fifth, but Matt Smith flew out to right. Minorik then led off the sixth with a base hit, but he was left right there.
BGSU starter Andrew Lacinak was cruising after Eastern Michigan scored one run in both the first and second, but Eastern Michigan hit two home runs in the sixth to pull away. A two-run shot and a solo homer pushed the Eagles' lead up to 5-1.
Lacinak exited after finishing the sixth, but Eastern Michigan plated two more runs in the seventh off Tony Landi. Meanwhile, Eastern Michigan starter Tyler Butzin was pitching a nice game. The southpaw allowed just one run over 7.2 innings of work. Butzin allowed six hits, struck out three and didn't issue a walk.
Tyler Anderson pitched the eighth for the Orange and Brown, allowing a solo home run, and the seven-run deficit was too much for Bowling Green to overcome in the ninth.
Randy Righter picked up his third hit of the ballgame – an RBI double to left – in the ninth. A wild pitch, and a Smith RBI single scored two more runs for the Falcons, but Bowling Green couldn't draw closer than 8-4.
The Orange and Brown will host four home games next week at Warren E. Steller Field. On March 29, the Falcons will welcome the University of Findlay to Bowling Green for a 3:05 p.m. first pitch. Bowling Green will then take on the University of Toledo over April 1-3.
