White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia – Playing for the third straight day, the BGSU men's golf team carded rounds of 294 and 303 on day one of the third annual Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational on Monday, April 11, to place in 15th overall with a 36-hole team score of 597, +37, at the par-70 Old White TPC course at The Greenbrier – America's Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.
After playing in frigid, wet and windy conditions over the weekend at the 2016 Robert Kepler Intercollegiate in Columbus, Ohio, the first day of the Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational on Monday provided weather in the high 60's and low 70's with some wind throughout the day.
The Falcons (597) are in 15th out of the 17-team field, sitting in front of Siena College (604) and St. Bonaventure (605).
"I think fatigue got to us today, especially over the second round in the afternoon," head coach Kevin Farrell commented. "As the day went on, we physically and mentally began to struggle. We've got to come out tomorrow with some better energy and be ready to play a strong 18 holes."
Brett Rinker once again paced the Falcons on Monday, as he carded a BGSU low round 70, even par, in round one and then tallied a second round 74, +4, to end the day in a tie for 17th-place overall with a 36-hole score of 144, +4. Rinker turned in five birdies and 22 pars on the day.
Three shots behind Rinker is fellow Falcon classmate Jose Narro with his 36-hole score of 147, +7. Narro turned in scores of 73, +3, and 74, +4, to place in a tie for 30th overall. The junior was up-and-down all day with four birdies and 21 pars overall.
Playing for the first time at The Greenbrier, freshman Pablo Heredia Iglesias shot rounds of 74, +4, and 78, +8, to conclude Monday in a tie for 63rd overall with a 36-hole score of 152, +12. He finished his 36-hole day with three birdies and 20 pars.
Sophomore Cameron Michalak placed in a tie for 72nd after the first two rounds of play with back-to-back rounds of 77, +7, for a combined two-round combined score of 154, +14. Michalak carded two birdies, one over each round of play, and 21 pars over his two rounds on Monday.
Rounding out the BGSU lineup was freshman Trey Walker. Walker, who was disqualified for the first round of play due to a scorecard error, shot a 78, +8, over the second round. With his lone round of 78, +8, counting, Walker is in an 89th overall. The freshman had two birdies and eight pars over his second set of 18-holes.
East Tennessee State leads the tournament field after two rounds of play with a 36-hole team score of 567, +7. Western Kentucky (576) is in second, while Eastern Kentucky (578) sits in third-place. Marshall (581) and Old Dominion (581) round out the top-five.
The third and final round is slated to tee-off at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start, weather permitting.
