Muncie, Ind. – The Bowling Green State University track and field team tied or set 22 personal bests, winning four events during day two of the Ball State Challenge Saturday. Senior Tiera Parker earned a Mid-American Conference automatic qualifying mark in the triple jump as the Falcons surged throughout the day.
"We had success in all of our event groups this weekend," BGSU Track and Field Coach Lou Snelling said. "That should set us up well to take advantage of our next two meets. If that happens, we can head into the MAC Championships in a strong position."
The Falcons competed 30 times in nine events on the day, setting 22 personal bests and placing first or second seven times. Jade Nolan, Raven Porter and Alicia Arnold swept the top three spots in the long jump, while Tiera Parker won the triple jump, Cassandra Boyle the 1500 and Porter tied for the high jump title. Arnold added a second place finish in the 100 while teammate Kera Lamotte finished the same in the 200.
Parker's triple jump distance of 39-feet-5.75 was a MAC automatic qualifying mark and equaled her personal best, which she set a year ago when she finished sixth at the MAC Championships. This year, it's good for the fourth-best performance in the league thus far. Nolan followed in fourth place with a collegiate best 36-5.75 and Kyla Paster was sixth at 36-0.25. Africa Strodes set a personal best as well at 34-11.25.
In the 1500, Cassandra Boyle was less than a second shy of a MAC automatic qualifying mark, but that didn't keep her from entering her name among BGSU's all-time leaders. She ran 4:32.89 to win the event and it is the fastest 1500 time for a Falcon since 1999, ranking sixth all-time. Rebecca Schott's 4:46.76 trimmed almost 13 seconds off her career best, while Elena Lancioni (4:49.67) and Rachel Walny (4:50.52) established PRs in the event. For Walny, it was her first race since exploding onto the season during the cross country season as a redshirt freshman, finishing as the top runner for a team that was MAC runner-up.
In the long jump, Nolan posted her best collegiate mark at 18-9 and Porter followed at 18-6. Arnold was third at 18-3.25 and Paster set a personal best at 17-9.75. Strodes also set a PR in the event at 16-1.
Both of the short sprints, the 100 and the 200, saw the Falcons set numerous personal bests. In the 100, Arnold placed second at 12.06 seconds and teammate Lamotte was third with a career-best 12.09 seconds. That time moved her into eighth place in BGSU history. Brianna Johnson, Taylor Rambo and Cortisha Short all set collegiate bests of their own.
In the 200, Lamotte's time of 24.48 seconds was good enough for second place and a personal best. Gabrielle Edwards, Johnson, Short and Green also had career days in the event.
Raven Porter tied for the 10th best performance in BGSU history in the high jump, leaping 5-7.25 to set a new personal best for her. She finished in a three-way tie for first.
In other events, Natalee Cole's 2:23.67 in the 800 cut almost six seconds off her previous fastest and Camerone Bryant's 1:06.51 in the 400 hurdles was almost two seconds faster than she's completed the event this year.
The meet was broken into dual meet scoring for each of the eight teams with each team earning seven results. Bowling Green went 4-3, defeating Butler (83-50), IPFW (80-61), Wright State (72-57) and Xavier (76-55). The Falcons were defeated by Miami (108-60), Toledo (95-60) and Ball State (95-61).
BGSU will look to build on the momentum this weekend as the Falcons travel to the Jesse Owens Track Classic, hosted by Ohio State, Friday and Saturday.
