Columbus, Ohio – Paced by a dominant performance from Aliyah Gustafson in the shot put, the Bowling Green State University track and field team continued its march this weekend towards the MAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Jesse Owens Track and Field Classic, hosted by Ohio State. The Falcons recorded eight top-10 finishes at the meet Friday and Saturday.
Competing in the championship flight of the shot put, Gustafson placed third overall with a personal best throw of 51-feet-11 (15.82m). All three of her legal throws carried at least 50-feet and her sixth and final toss of the day generated her new career best. It is the longest throw in the Mid-American Conference this year, the second-best throw in school history and ranks her 15th in the region.
Teammate Makenzie Wheat, who ranked second in the MAC in the shot put heading into the weekend, threw 49-3.75 to place eighth.
Three Falcons placed among the top 11 in the triple jump, led by freshman Jade Nolan. Nolan earned a MAC automatic qualifying bid with a jump of 39-0.25 and finished seventh. With the jump, she moved into third place in school history. Tiera Parker, who has already reached the MAC automatic qualifying minimum and is second in school history in the event, placed eighth at the meet at 38-11.75. Kyla Paster was two inches shy of the MAC auto mark and moved into fourth in BGSU history as she jumped 38-7 for an 11th place finish.
The Falcons had several other personal bests and top 10 MAC results during the weekend. In the 400, Taylor Rambo ran the fifth-fastest race in the MAC this year with a season-best time of 55.95 seconds. In the 100, Dorresha Green posted one of the top 10 results in the league this year at 11.94 seconds. Cortisha Short added a personal best time at 12.12 seconds. In the 200, Short had another personal best with a team-best 24.67 seconds. Alicia Arnold had a season-best 24.76 seconds in the same race and Brianna Johnson posted a PR 25.12.
Cassandra Boyle added the best time for a Falcon this year in the 800 at 2:15.03 and the 1600 relay team of Gabrielle Edwards, Cheyenne Oswald, Natalee Cole and Rambo ran the team's fastest race of the year in 3:55.36. In the hammer throw, Kayla Velasquez finished second at 182-1 and freshman Allie Farmer continue to push her PR forward, throwing 166-1.
"We took positive steps forward this weekend, highlighted by Aliyah's big throw in the shot put," BGSU Track and Field Coach Lou Snelling said. "But, for us to be in the best position heading into the MAC Championships, we still have a lot to accomplish at Hillsdale and Ashland."
Bowling Green will return to action this weekend at a pair of meets. The Falcons will compete at the Gina Relays, hosted by Hillsdale, beginning Thursday and running through Saturday. Members of the team (mostly throwers) will compete at the Ashland Alumni Open Friday and Saturday.
