Three MAC Auto Bids Serve As Springboard For Falcons
April 30, 2016 | Women's Track and Field
Hillsdale, Mich./Ashland, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University track and field team grabbed three Mid-American Conference automatic bids and the Falcons shattered personal bests in almost every event as the team competed at two meets Friday. BGSU's throwers were at the Ashland Alumni Open and the remainder of the team was at the Gina Relays, hosted by Hillsdale.
At Hillsdale, 12-of-16 Falcons set personal bests. Redshirt freshman Rachel Walny earned a MAC automatic bid in the 5000 and senior Andrea Alt did the same in the 3000 steeplechase.
In the 5000 championship race, Walny ran 16:51.65 in just the second race she has competed in since completing the cross country season in the fall. It was the first time she ran the 5000, but moved into fourth place all-time at BGSU with her time. Mackenzie McMillin was less than two seconds shy of a MAC auto bid with a time of 17:08.67. Elena Lancioni added a personal best time of 17:15.16 and Becca Rae had a season-best time of 17:19.08.
On Thursday evening, the 5000 open race was competed and Rebecca Schott finished fourth in 17:18.05, another PR. As well, Allison Francis broke 18:00 for the first time in her career at 17:57.03.
Alt added a MAC auto bid with a time of 10:45.73 in the 3000 steeplechase, posting a new career best. While she has earned a spot on the podium at the MAC Championships in the event in each of the first three years of her career, she continues to progress with stronger times.
Also at the Gina Relays, Gabrielle Edwards placed second in the open division of the 100 with a career-best time of 12.30 seconds. Kyla Paster was fourth in the long jump, adding a personal best distance of 18-feet-8. Teammate Jade Nolan was just an inch behind at 18-7 and Africa Strodes set a career best at 16-2.25. In the 400, Brianna Johnson ran her fastest career time at 58.94 seconds and Cassandra Boyle did the same in the 1500 championship heat at 4:32.54. Camerone Bryant finished the 400 hurdles in 1:05.89, trimming time off of her personal best.
"The plan was for this to be a big weekend for us distance-wise," BGSU Head Coach Lou Snelling said. "It's nice to see that happen. Rachel Walny and Mackenzie McMillin are just getting back to racing, while Rebecca Schott and Elena Lancioni had good PR's. Andrea Alt got the auto mark in the steeple with Cassandra Boyle just missing it in the 1,500. It was a good couple of days for us."
At the Ashland Alumni Open, Kori Reiser recorded a season-best mark in the hammer throw at 178-11. That was good enough for a MAC automatic qualifying bid. Teammate Kayla Velasquez finished with a mark of 177-4.
Bowling Green will continue the weekend at each meet Saturday.
